look out south dakota

Tracks on our grain cart allow us to run in wetter conditions than most of the neighbors already. Now we just need some on the combine. :face-icon-small-hap

better go buy a cat then!
hope your yields are better than some areas in mn! lincoln county is really bad! we are in lyon & they are ok but we hoped for better. we didn't have enough rain when we really needed it. :face-icon-small-dis

btw - good luck with the birds! heard they were rolling grassland out there this year to kill some of the early birds & eggs because the population is growing so fast. there will be plenty out there for you guys!

i'm with ya flatlander. here in sw iowa the beans pretty much suck. but any of the corn that has been harvested is great, but we have a long way to go.

we're off, the dog is outside doing cartwheels, he saw the guns get loaded in the van.

We're planning a trip to SD (Chamberlain area) for the first part of December for a pheasant hunt. Any suggestions or lessons learned you want to share, I'd appreciate it!

December in SD it could be 35* and sunny, or -35* and blowing 50mph. Bring plenty of clothes for both. Also throw a bottle of water or two in your vest before you start walking, if not for you at least for the dog if you have one. Unless you're going to be shooting steel shot, I would go with a full choke and whatever shells you can get the most range out of. By Dec. the birds are usually getting pretty smart and get up a ways ahead of you.

talked to some friends up there, said they slaughtered them saturday.
if you hunt public ground you must use steel shot. later in the year they get pretty skittish, so larger shells are a must. try to walk quietly, don't slam car doors. use a dog you don't have to yell at all the time, and the birds know what a dog whistle sounds like.
if weather permits we may go up next weekend.

I didn't know you had to use steel shot on public. Good to know! Thanks!

Also, if anyone has any contacts of people with land up near Chamberlain, that would be great......maybe could work out a trade for some avy gear or something if they typically charge.

Our hunters had better luck last weekend than they have had all season. Over limits every day and no problems with them getting up too far away. I would guess it has something to do with the corn being 60-70% picked in the 10 days before that.
