I thought we were talkin 1400+ since a 1000 yards is achievable very easily with an over the counter rifle
Ive done the bow hunting thing and was successful. IMO.....game has a better chance of running off if the shot is poor. Then you have an animal walking around with an arrow stuck in it. Bow hunting is a lot of fun, Ron Cash should be in here telling you how bow hunting goes down. The man knows it.......where are ya mtn-extreme???
But I prefer my rifles. I prefer them because I build them to MY specs. I stay away from fu fu brass and shoot SAMMI over the counter cartridges. I can still go to any sports store, buy a box of .270WSM, pop the bullets out, resize it and load my 6.5's if in a bind.
A lot of people knock long range shooting. Most of the people knocking...are the ones who are spotting a 350+ class bull but don't feel "comfortable" making a 600 yard shot, then hear the shot from behind them and down goes the elk.
And usually at 800 yards and further, by the time it takes you to get to the animal, pending where it lays, you can lose the meat quickly, and it's a SOB to field dress an animal when rigamortis has set in.
Just my .02, flame on
Also....if you do your homework....1000 yard rock chuck shots are very duable with the rifle you have, all it takes is a face lift and some homework and a little bit of dedication. I've seen Remington Model 7 .260's do this with a barrel job and ballistic info.
how long is long range to you guys are you talking like 800 to 1000 yards and futher?
