thats about what i have into my .338 edge with optics

I don:t believe that the 416 would be legal to hunt with. I believe in idaho any rifle over 23 LBS is not legal. that stops people fom using 50’s

the price of the action alone on the 416 could buy you gas for a lifetime.

I wish i could find a inexpensive 300 gr. rebated boat tail bullet

Lost River Ballistics and jameson in SD make a sound bullet. Solid copper though, best BC offered without going military but they burn the barrel out faster than norm. Best to moly coat and reload till you find faint extracter marks and slight cratering on the primer. Just my opinion. Forgot what Jamesons website was....he sells the Cheytac brass.

I have looked at lost river but more then a buck a bullet. thats a bit rich for my blood. I just had twin girls. so i have to do things the poor mans way. word is that berger is supposed to come out with a .338 around 300 gr. wildcat also did some testing with a .338 that they claim had a BC of more then 1 but i know the guy that did the testing and it didn't go so well.

What is the point of long range "hunting"?

It isn't even hunting. It's like calling in a f*cking artillery strike on a deer.

Where is the does the "hunting" come in with this?

Some people prefer stalking the animal to see how close they can get, test their ninja skills, if you will. Bow hunters brag about this a lot.

Others prefer long range, to test their shooting skills.

To each his own, personally I'd never hunt long range...too far to walk.

IME to be truely efective on rock rats you have to be far enough away that they can't hear the report. so long range is the effective means. I like to shoot big ranges to stay sharp if nothing else. I hunt with everything from a longbow to the super mags and I have a love for it all, its my true passion.

FWIW my current fave big ranger is a gre-tan built 6.5-06 it shoots a javelin like bullet into a rediculous group at some impressive ranges and is still light enough to take hunting (2 elk and one deer thus far). not the fastest, it seems my bullets like to go 28-2900 more so then faster......oh well, it will keep me out of broughtons catalog for a while;)

I prefer to test my ability to lure the animals into food or apple trees with freshly "fallen" apples...or maybe a few rotten pumpkins that made there way out into the open;)

Really I just sit where I know they always are and shoot as soon as it's clear. No stalk, no shooting olng distances. Hell I pack soup, sandwhiches, blankets and books when I go. And this year, it's an enclosed heated stand:D

per page 65 in the 2009 Idaho reg...

"In any hunt, including any-weapon seasons, it is unlawful to
pursue or kill big game animals with any firearm that, in combination with a scope, sling and/or any attachments, weighs more than 16 pounds."

So even heavy barreled big bores might have to be careful. But I'm not sure how heavily they enforce the rifle weight law. Curiously though, I couldn't find anything that mentioned ammunition capacity, but I've heard that you can't use anything carrying more than 5 rounds.

30-378 Weatherby with a Huskamaw turret scope. shoot Berger VLD's. This gun is unreal... My dad is setting up a WarBird 6.2 (i think) with the same scope and a 140 grain berger right now.. should be a pretty crazy set up as well..

I've personally never shoot my gun past 600 yards (just not comfortable shooting at a animal over that) But it sure is nice knowing i can group at 500 yards what my old gun could do at 100, and without any guess work, you just range, hold out the wind meter and turn the scope to what you came up with... Still rather be up in the mountains with my Mathews DXT any day though :D

I guess a guy couldnt use a BOHICA .50 then, they are around 32#:(:(:(

I'd be close to that with .300 WinMag fully loaded ....... I believe it comes in around 15 with scope, bipod, and ammo.

Likewise, though I know gun (.204 Ruger right now) will kill a PD out further, just a little uneasy out past 500 yds. Small target even with scope zoomed to max.

I've really just gotten into the long range shooting, prior shots of 100 - 200 yds were the norm. Really enjoying being able to reach out more than double that with a fair bit of accuracy. I still carry the .17 HMR on PD hunts too, anything out to 200 I use it if winds not excesive. Lots cheaper to shot and just as deadly on the dog. And a load of fun to shot.
