Line Boring 800 cases

When you get 800 cases lined bored should there be any visual signs of the old bearing wear?If so what is acceptable? Thanks

There should be VERY little if any sign of bearing wear. More superficial if anything. If the case was line bored and the case halfs decked be sure the snap ring grove that the crankshaft snap ring fits in was also machined the same thickness removed from the case halves deeper so the snap ring doesn't bottom out and keep the cases from coming together completely.

Actually you should not see where the bearings were sitting on a feshly line bored case. If you can see that the area was to big to be touched by the boring tool and is still bigger than the ones that were machined down. i would put the case together and torque it down And not just the case bolts, the cylinder studs are part of this process as well. Mic it out and see what is going on. Moast case borers are giving extra squish, probably up .0025 on these cases.I'm not a case machinist so check into it.

Hardass is right, you shouldn't see any marks in a freshly bored case. If you do then maybe it was in too bad of condition to bore. You can only take so much off the case halves before the stator won't fit in.

Is it stamped on the case halves how much was taken off? When Northern does it they stamp the 2 haves with the amount taken off, for example .003.

Line bore

Thanks for all the input the cases I have been looking at look good except for the clutch slide it has a 3/8 of an inch wide spot that tapers down too nothing that the line bore did not clean up. What do you think, Thanks for the replies

If after line boring, it did not clean up the entire area of where the bearings will seat It will not have a good squish on the bearings when the case haves are torqued, I would look for another case.

If I may ask who fixed the cases, it sounds like something allsport polaris in spokane WA would do. I learned a valuable and expensive lesson with those half whitted hack jobs.

Ridin' Out West

I'd say the same about flat landing, think of all the hp I have at sealevel, cruising down a lake at a 123 mph is pretty fun also.

I hope some people check my thread out on the cases, I couldn't believe mine after I got them back.

You can still have all that H.P., just got to Turbo it, that's all.

We usually trailer our short track machines to Yellowstone every 2-3 years or so, it's a 24 hour ride for us, but well worth it.

If you ever get the opportunity to go, don't pass it up!

Or live and ride in Alaska where we park the trucks at the edge of the sea and ride straight up the mountians :D Best of both worlds
