lets talk skid plates

Agree with gman. The hits 'that have taken out my a-arms come from the front not the bottom. Usually trees sticking out of the snow not hidden under it. The Skinz plate gets like an avy shovel of snow stuck on each side.

I have been happy with my factory plate on my 12.
I tore a boot on the tie rod and had to remove the plate, that was a minor issue but one that after a hard hit may create issues when putting stuff back in place.
The only other issue I had was color selection, I have orange on top and wanted down below but it was not to be with the factory plate.

I won't buy anything from skinz ever again, my first mistake was buying a float plate from them where the holes weren't drilled properly, it took them MONTHS to sort it out.

The second time I gave them a chance it was on a seat - ordered in September, when December rolls around and the snow starts flying it was still not delivered, when I called they said they were still building them, and if I need it urgently, I can pay $75 rush fee to get it built within a week.

Seeing as i couldn't ride without a seat, I opted for the $75, but it still makes me angry to this day that they would bait and switch me on a product.

In the end the products are fine but they have absolutely no idea how to run a business.

I like the Polaris skid plate. Haven't tried the others, though. My previous experience on my '09 XP was with the Ski Doo skid plate that covered more of the A-arms. The wider skid plate would get packed with snow so bad that it pushed out the rivets mounting it, and it got run over. Less is more in my book.

hardware problems?

so has anyone had issues with the buildup of snow/ice causing their (SPG) hardware/plate to be compromised or damaged on their pro? I have seen this on previous sleds of my own...

Not trying to start anything, but I have had the exact opposite experience with SPG. They have provided me excellent products, and have been very helpful. I do see a lot of guys saying that their parts take longer than hoped or expected. I have also seen (and been told directly by Skinz), that the reason for this is that they make all of their products in house or by trusted contractors, and refuse to outsource to gain volume, at the expense of quality. I am sorry to hear that you had a bad experience, but I truly believe that this is not the norm.

I feel the same way, they made me a one off product a few years back. I needed a bigger pocket in a handlebar bag for my GPS. Sure it took a few weeks to get to me but they built it for me!

All I will run is a SPG float plate. Had an 07 Dragon come down on a rock once right where the a arms bolt to the bulkhead. Looked minor but pretty much totaled out the sled. Float plate would have had it covered! Never own a sled without one again. (Polaris skid plate wouldn't have had that area protected.)

ND is considered Midwest so, again, no argument there - I would own a full coverage plate for riding there too. Mountains? Not a chance! It comes down to the GEOGRAPHY you ride in peeps!

Have FUN!

X50..on the skins float plate! Very tough, thicker and they give you a aluminum backing plate too. If you dont like the wings, just cut them off...think of the front of your sled like a jetski ripping down the lake...what pushes snow and wha:face-icon-small-coot floats over it....
