lets talk skid plates

Looking for a skid plate for my '13 pro...i see SPG offers a standard and a lightweight...polaris has one too....any opinions good or bad? any that I am missing?

I will always recommend SPG stuff. They build quality products, that work for the type of riding we do in the West. I have a Float plate on my pro, but I did trim it quite a bit, because I felt it was holding in a bunch of snow under the A-Arms

spg float plate here as well, I want the most coverage possible under there. It's taken some major shots.

SPG regular, fits perfect, looks great, well worth the money. You can but the SPG one for slightly more than OE. The OE one is much smaller and protects alot less. Easy decision IMO

Ordered the Poo one for the kids' RMK6 coming, check it out then, as I will be wanting to add one to my Assault.. Also got the HD Poo bumper.. Can you tell it's the kids sled? hahaha

IMHO this is one of those rare instances where the factory Poo accessory is superior to the aftermarket version. Less is more with skid plates (learned the hard way with Doos and Holeshots - need to CUT them away from A-arms to get the nice sidehilling/carving action).

Factory one is superior only in narrowness..SPG float is good at protecting those $$ A arms ! They work!

I surely don't want a float plate that would cover my a-arms where I hit it with that rock. That would be a super wide float plate....747 wings, lol.

They go out less than half way on the SPG. I like a narrow skid plate too, the stock one is a nice balance between protection and handling.

gman,

so what you are saying is that you have found the SPG in stock form hindered your sidehilling and carving ability?

Not my experience. The Float plates as Skinz calls it does assist with floatation. The Polaris plate has no coverage over the a arms at all, which get hung up in the snow. Different strokes for different folks maybe but I think the Skins plate is way superior.

Agreed 100%. Polaris one simply does not protect like the Skinz.

For Minnesota I won't disagree (from MI so I know what you have to deal with). For mtn riding, not a chance - snow builds up in those wing areas and they aren't needed for protection after the first few snows here. So... different geographies, not different strokes!

Anything that extends into that area will and also pack with snow for deep snow mtn riding and is simply not necessary. Partial coverage provides iffy protection at best anyway - I've seen sleds with destroyed A arms that had full cover plates so you're fooling yourself if you think they'll make them invincible.
