Let's hear your worked all night to get sled finished story

this may be a bit long winded but it is a great story.

Last year we were planning a trip to Buffalo Pass, CO for new years. the week before we got snow in MN so we decided to ride the sleds a bit because i wanted to breaking my new top end and my brother installed extros and a new track and wanted to make sure everything worked. We rode about 5 miles and we were amazed how good the snow was for Dec. I found some drifts to play in a ditch and we both got stuck at the same time. my brother comes to help me, and for some reason i turn and look at his sled and it is on fire! we both dive for it and start packing snow in the engine compartment. my brother opens the exhaust side panel and it was like a flamethrower that almost hit him. after 30 seconds we got the fire out and just sat there in disbelief at what just happened.

we towed it to the shop and when it thawed out we saw all the damage. the wiring harness was completely melted along with the oil tank (which caused the flamethrower). so 2 days before we leave for CO we tore the sled down to the frame and found every burnt part and replaced them and got the sled ready at midnight before we were supposed to leave the next morning.

we left for the trip and the first day we unload at buffalo pass, we are all just pumped to ride! i lead for a mile or so down the trail and look back, no one behind me. i turn around and i get back to the group, they are parked 100 yards down the trail from the parking lot and my brother is swearing up a storm and kicking his sled. the torsion spring in the rear skid jumped off the preload block and stabbed a hole in the track and took a 8" round chunk out! we could not believe it! so he loaded up and took the truck to Fort Collins to get a spring and found a new track at a salvage yard.

we rode all day, had a great time. when we got back to the hotel in walden at 6 we started to take the track out to replace. at 8 we were putting the driveshaft back in and realized the new track didn't have all the windows open and he just installed extroverts. we took the driveshaft out and found a dremel tool from the owner of the hotel, which by the way let us work in his garage, thanks! we spent the next 2 hours cutting windows out of the track while drinking and getting high of the burning rubber. we finished around 1 am and had the sled loaded on the trailer for the next day.

the rest of the trip went great until the last day when my brother decided his sled could climb trees and rode up a 6" diameter pine and snapped it off and crushed his hood, bumper and pipe. good times!

A few years back I had a old 996 Russ Lemke in my 01 zx chassis that burnt down. I had used the 700 out of it and put it in a 99 670 chassis, and we had the 670 asa spare.

My son was working nightshift, so he could help me, and the next day we leaving fo BC over Christmas holidays.

I worked a 12 hour day, came home and stayed up all night, by myself, pulling the 996 out of the zx chassis, the 700 out of the 670 chassis, so that I could put the 700 back in the zx chassis, then put the 670 back in the s-2000 chassis. It took alot longer just to do a swap than I thought!!!

Still had a couple good days of riding!!!

Cristmas eve while everyone else was sittin warm in the house i worked all night on my brothers sled to add slp brake rotor and hub+pads, polaris lightweight jackshaft, hyperfax, repair tunnel extension, 2 trailing arms, 2 radius rods, 1 shock, new handle bars with grips and heaters, 3" abr riser, new gears, Carbides, Belt, Clutch kit, slp twins + cheater heads, Motor plate, motor stop, Airbox mod, And Egt 's, 136 to 156 extension kit. Sled had not been riden for 2 years and was stored outside with no cover, Cracked hood repair , new windshield, new dash, Had to clean carbs, airbox, inside of engine, reeds had grass in them(wtf) and an all around clean job + new license. Got it all done by myself so my bro could ride the next day and we went out and he drove for about 4 hours and we switched sleds and i noticed he had the premium switch off so i flipped it on and 10 minutes later burnt piston. I was so pissed that to this day everybody still makes fun of me for freakin out.

Burned down 440 Doo in a rev race chassis and I manage to swap in a 800 HO (I was planning on doing the swap so I had all the parts ready) that was just completely rebuilt top to bottom. I get the motor in around 2 am so I decide to wait and start it up in the morning. Next morning I wake up and run to the garage and notice coolant seeping from the base gasket. I say a quick WTF? and start pulling the motor, once I get the motor apart I look at the base gasket and noticed that part of it was thinner than the rest of it another Doo mess up but shame on me for not paying attention. Put a new gasket on (I was lucky I had an extra new gasket) buttoned up the motor and put it back in the sled and with 3 pulls it fired right up and off I went.

It took me just under 3 hours to pull the motor and replace the base gasket and put it back in and start it. (now with several hundred trouble free miles)
So why does Doo charge a minim.10 hours to do a top end at $110 an hr. plus parts

All so I can ride AK pow

P.S. stop highmarking on my jump

Stayed up all night before a trip to cooke city putting motor mounts in a 2002 polaris 800 that had stapped the day before. Couldnt find them from the dealer so we made them. Strong as hell and lots of miles on them now with no troubles.

Yes, way tooooooo many times, I say I would not do it again, but that is a lie, I will do a LOT to ride the next day. For some reason, I feel that in the next few weeks, I will be doing it again! Complete motor buildup the night before last year, finish a new tunnel, drivers, gears, clutching, track, yeah, that was an ALL NIGHTER, like, first ride was up and down the driveway at 7 am, and I started noon the previous day, pizzing off the neighbors, then loaded it on the trailer and rode! good day.

Haha.... I have a couple. I usually wait until the last minute to get my sled ready.....the guys I travel with always give me crap. This tactic has not worked out for me...so I have learned to get my sled ready well in advance to avoid trouble.

I blew my engine up in the finals at the end of the grass drag season in 2004. I spent the winter saving money for a piston kit, and got my crank redone. I was putting the engine in my sled until 2 AM in a shed with the help of flash lights and a lantern (the night before we left to race in West Yellowstone). I did get 3rd place in West that year :)

Brings back memories...... I remember when I was 17 (2003) and I first started racing, I rebuilt my engine in a storage shed LOL. I had a generator and florescent light setup. I know it sounds a little bit white trash, but it got the job done.

Moral of the stories...do what you have to do, but don't procrastinate.
