Let's compare 2012 gmc's

like MH said..dont run auto ..it will smoke the viscous coupler out of it in no time..also tire diameters on each corner are huge to the life of the case..take a tape measure, measure from the ground to the rim /tire lip at the top of the rim....make sure every tire regardless of air pressure needed..is less then 1/4" of ea. other...(I shoot for 1/8" but I am a picky sob) and service the diffs and case often(I do mine every 20000 miles)..make darn sure when the engine oil is done they check and verify fluid levels as well..........

I guess i better be carefull... 191,000 on my 05 that i run in auto all the time unless im towing and it's really bad out. Maybe im just not hard enough on my truck.... :)

go out and look at your tires on your present truck..unless you are relegeous about rotating(like every 3000 miles) or never give it more then 1/8 throttle your tires will show much more wear on the rears as far as tread depth..that is due to driving in 2 by..every time you acelerate weather from a stop, on a corner, even passing gear on the hiway, it rolls the tires even if it doesnt flat out break them loose....AWD doesnt do that...awd wears tires extremely evenly, and adds safety in the handling department as well when sudden evasive moves are needed..I too thought a standard case was better..no way...awd is much better, my best friend rebuilds t-cases and axles all day everyday for a company called youngs gear..thats all they do...in 8 years..they have seen one damaged AWD case..it caught a curb when a woman slid off the road..snapped the case in half..thats it..they average 1 part time gm case over haul a day year round(summer building cores for winter..winter just fixing all the tore up cases)..most common failure...metal wear clip comes out of case allowing pump housing to eat a hole in the case and pump the oil out...

Im in 2wd 90% of the time on mine. You are right actually 2 of my tires do wear out faster than the others.... The Fronts do.... Cause it's and IFS truck and they always beat up the outside edges of the tires... I always see more wear on the front than on the back... I guess my truck is just Special!!! :)

no..just crappy steering linkage on those years..lol..go look at the 20 somethings trucks and compare..but I hear you, i didnt have any issues with either my 01 or 03 suburbans either except for the tire wear on the back of the 03 with an 8.1..it was rough on tires(or maybe that was my right foot?)

Might have more to do with driving style. Lots of highway miles, and driving slower in town wears the rears more. Aggressive city driving eats fronts. My truck used to wear fronts fast when I lived in the Minneapolis area and drove in the city alot. Same truck now wears the rears down faster than the fronts because I bike to school/work and only drive my truck to go down the highway/longer trips.

I got 70k on my last set of BFG all terrains so i guess i don't really care... over 20k on my duratrac's now and they still look great too... I think it's just cause the 5.3 doesn't have the power to spin the tires anyway! :)

LOL..yeah the 5.3 might be the saviour for your tires.....

why? its well documented it is the toughest t-case gm installs, it stops the uneven tire wear that plagues 4x's and it works flawlessly...good reason not to like it..........

I just like having Low Range. You don't need it a lot, but when you do its nice.

I'm fine with AWD as long as you can lock the t case and have low range.

I've also seen my buddies Escalade EXT 6.2 with AWD in action. He got stuck in the parking lot once and it seemed like the front tires were not spinning or not spinning near as much or as fast as the rear. We were not too impressed.

I'm assuming this t case has a viscous coupling and no lock up capability?

That's just it, you take it off of auto when it's really bad out. The way you are running it is fine. It's when people use it on a snow packed road and the transfer case is always engaging and disengaging the 4x4 system.

next time it does that..reach down and shutoff the traction control..it messes with it when you are stuck.. yes, it uses a coupler..but different then what the auto case uses, the auto case eats up the fork and bearing set up as well as the coupler when driven in auto on slick roads, the awd doesnt do that..and yes low range would be nice..but with a 4.03 low gear in the 6 speed...not normally needed on the road...

I installed a Milemarker viscous coupling in the front shaft of my 91 GMC 1500 4x4.

First thing I did was take it to a very steep dirt hill and put the truck in low range, expecting to feel some slippage of the coupling.

No slippage. Climbed right up that hill and I was going as slow as possible.

On pavement, no tire skipping experienced in 4x4 mode while turning.

Amazing.

Too bad they stopped making these. They were around $400 approx 17 years ago or so.

I know my current HD 2500 4x4 GMC, 2002, with locking rear diff, is very sensitive to tire sizes on the rear and you want to run nearly identical diameters otherwise you'll cause more wear/tear on your tires and rear diff.

The redneck in me wants to add a double chrome rollbar and KC lights.

Very Nice.

I wonder why GM doesn't offer the 6.2 in the 2500HD. The 6.0L has been around a long time with out much updates. The 5.3L seems to go through some updates every year and I would assume the 6.2L has more updates like the 5.3L

Our 09 Suburban 5.3L just averaged 20.3 on the way to NY. We had the back loaded to the headliner with gridwall and parts. Lots of weight.

The 6 is an iron block. Built to take heat and loads for longer. Also has more cooling that the 6.2

The 6.0 has also been updated through the years. The 6.2 is a great engine, but will need to be reworked some before you'll see it in a HD. Just like the old Buick 455 and Cadillac 500 big blocks that you never saw in a HD truck.

Go for the HD. I personally DD an 04 everyday and my uncle has an 11 Denali for a DD. DD or not, I'd way rather hook up to a 2500 vs. a 1500. JMO.
