leaking chaincase

My chaincase leaks. I've tried new gaskets, and silcone, it still leaks. I can't track down where exactly it is coming from. Is there a another seal other then the outter seal that could be bad? I just had it apart when I did my track and didn't see any cracks or tell tell signs. It has leaked since day one of owning the sled.

only other spot is the o-rings on the bearings. Could silicon the bearings in as well.
Is the cover straingh, i had a bent cover after snaping a chain, it look find until you put it on a flat surface and then you could see it was bent.

Would a bad seal on the bearing allow fluid to escape into the belly pan? The leak is almost instant when I add fluid.

I guess I need to pull the cover and see if the cover is straight.

Wish it wasn't such a PITA to pulling the cover.

have you checked the drain plug yet? The drain plug is horizontal and faces towards the track.

The drain is inside the tunnel and if it were leaking through it, the oil would be on the ground not in the belly pan

The drain plug is on the inside of your tunnel. It is in the very bottom of the back half of the chain case. there is a hole in the tunnel that it sticks through. you can only see about half of the bolt head when you look under there. Does it drain all of your fluid? If it is the drain plug i would think you would lose all of the fluid. The lower bearing has 2 seals. One o ring on the inside of the bearing that seals the drive shaft. One big o ring that sits on the outside of the bearing between the case and the gold triangle piece that holds the bearing in place. If it only leaks some of your fluid that might give you an idea of where it is leaking. Try to figure out the level of where it stops leaking.

I will know in the morning how much leaks out. I need to check the drain plug, I didn't know it had one, thought you had to just pull the case and deal with the mess.

Rixter is correct. I would tend to believe that is the O-ring on the bottom bearing as well. If you say it has leaked since new my guess is it was pinched in assembly.

Hope this helps if there is anything else I can help you with let me know.

Jeff

Don't know how long it has leaked, bought it used.

Dip stick looks dry and it looks like all the oil is now on the shop floor.

arrgg, it has a brand new gasket so I know that's not the problem.

Pulled the drain bolt, no oil came out. The bolt it's self is dry and I do not think oil is getting past it. I'm going to teflon it and put it back in just in case.

Is there something cheaper then gear oil I can put in it till I find the leak?

Pulled the access panel off below the chaincase. Found the leak and another problem

chaincase cover is not fully seating into the case, causing the leak I think...

The lower most chaincase cover bolt casing is cracked on the outside, I do not see how this would let oil out, going to fill it will silcone and down the bolt hole just in case.

I hope the cover isn't bent and that I can get it to seat.

Did I remember reading somewhere that some models had different covers that worked better? Plastic maybe? Mines alum.

I broke s case last year when i broke a chain. The stock case from cat is pretty cheap, like 60 bucks if I remember right.

The case is fine other then the one crack, I could weld it and re-tap the hole if I really wanted but it will be fine as is.

Do you know if some of the covers were plastic? Seems like they would be less prone to bending.

I know the prior owner just didn't take his time when putting the case back on and cross-seated it. The sled was in pretty bad shape when I got it.

Well tore into it again today, it appears the cover is flat and the case is what is not straight. You can see in the photo i attached where it doesn't seat.

This sucks, I really do not want to have to put a new chaincase in it.

I broke one of the plastic chain cases on my 04 and when I put an aluminum case, the back part, on I had to shim the bolts, between the case and the bulkhead, to get the case to sit flat when the bolts were tight. If this sled was as abused as you say the bulkhead is likely a little tweaked and you may need to use shims to get the case flush.

PM me if I don't make sense.
