Layering - what do you guys use?

I'm finally getting away from the single layer "big" snowmobile suit style clothing and going to the better breathing, windproof technology of today.

What are you guys using for layers? I have my outer stuff, but what should I use for the base and mid?

Thanks in advance.

I just wear some light fleece under wear under my Klim suit. That is it. Unless it is much below zero, then I will add another light fleece jacket. I don't ride too many trails though. Never get cold except for the trail ride out. Once you start working through the trees it's all good.

Some good longjohns, then wool socks, wool army surplus bibs, wool shirt.
That's usually enough under an uninsulated shell. If it's real cold, double up on the longjohns and add a fleece top or down vest.

I tend to wear a good synthetic long underwear, then a cotton tee/turtle neck over that, then bring an extra fleece or something with me. Bieng a snowshoe'r I've found this to be the best combination for layering, the synth. wicks moisture away, the cotton outer collects. No matter how cold it is out I always find myself working up a sweat somehow and if it's not bieng wicked away I'm cold shortly there after....

:beer;:D

tshirt, tekvest, klim jacket. Should probably get away from the tshirt, but everything else i've tried thus far drives me crazy. Bunches up or chafes my nips.

Bottom half i wear athletic shorts, knee braces, and wool socks under snowboard pants w/ klim boots.

Moisture wicking base layer is a MUST, pulls the moisture off your body. After that it's how well you handle the cold.
If it's 10 degrees or colder I'll wear Cool-Max jogging pants/jersey or Fleece top and bottom if it's really cold.
I got most of my base and mid layer clothing from CostCo, works good and it's cheap...what more can you ask for. They have some Merino Wool socks right now that work great, tested them Elk hunting, no way am I going to be working that hard snowmobiling and my sweaty azz feet stayed dry.

If you just stay away from anything with cotton in it you'll be fine.

I have found the under armour stuff to work great.

BEST 90 bucks I ever spent for winter time clothes or clothes in general. Hurt at the time but I'm thinking how I can sneak some more into the dresser.

Use it hunting, working, under clothes when it's 20 below for driving to work, wear it dirt biking if it's cool. Stuff flat out works, wet or dry.

Under Armour for sure. I used it for football, i use it for riding. Any instance you sweat in, UA does the trick. Tried using it for hockey a few times but its much more comfortable to just go naked underneathe it all in my opinion.

snowmobiling though, A++... usually on top of it I wear a T-shirt and a pair of gym shorts. then comes my thin fleece and jacket for the top, and snowboard style pants on bottom. As for socks, wool makes me itch so I use my Easton socks, made for keeping you warm inside your skates, work wonders in my outdated Highmark 2's

UA or Klim tops (long sleeve or short depending on the temps)
Nike bottoms (just like the UA stuff)

The next layer just depends on the temps. If it's nice out I'll wear just the base layer and then Klim outer. Always carry a warm fleece pullover with just in case we have an overnighter.

Icebreaker clothing. All winter, even in summer I wear their lighter layers. It's expensive, but it's pure merino wool, soft, DOES NOT ITCH at all, very warm, absorbent, and never smells- even after my boyfriend wears the same thing for a week! I hate smartwool stuff, it's nowhere near as good as Icebreaker. You can get it cheaper on ebay. I just layer that as many pieces as I need, under a waterproof jacket, snow pants, and boots. And lots of toe warmers. And they're light and pack up tightly to take up less space than a less warmer material. They also dry quickly. I've put on a shirt a couple hours after having an entire beer leak into it with no wetness or smell at all after just leaving it in my backpack for a while it will dry right out.

Another vote for UnderArmour. Wear it Hunting, sledding, etc. Dries very quickly. Mid is usually a fleece sweatshirt. Outer Bibs and shell coat. Socks are Underarmour or Polartech. Head is usually just helmet. Underarmour balaclava if it gets really cold. Haven't found gloves I like yet.

Best thing about Underarmour is it doesn't smell as bad as the polypro I used to wear.

I use ThermoMax baselayer from Cabelos, Fleece bottoms(Cabelos or Klim) if cold, Klim MX jersy or Klim fleece top if cold, TekVest. Wear UA or merino wool socks, CastleX boots. Top it all with Klim jacket/pants
