Lawn Fert

OK I finally nuked all the weeds in my lawn and it is now time to start fert treatments.

I live in SE MN, good black farm soil. What should I be using. Grass is growing fine but it's kinda dull green and yellow looking, it needs to green up.

Start out with some Malorganite (sp) and a few weeks after that application, move on to some Scott's turf builder.

I used to go to the local "Fert" plant and have them give me a 50/50 mix of their dry fertilizer, I think it was urea and nitrogen??, one was brown and one was white. I would have some of the thickest, greenest grass around as long as I kept it watered. But mowing every 4-5 days got to be a drag so I slowed down on the fertilizer and the last couple years have been using Scott's. When it's dry and I have to water I only have to mow once every 7-10 days and the lawn doesn't look bad, not near as good as with the stuff from the Fert plant though.

I use Ortho's Weed b gone and spray the whole yard a couple times a year and that does a good job of keeping the weeds out. Not a blade of crabgrass or any dandelions.

Set your mower on the highest setting, taller/thicker grass will help keep the weeds out.

what the hell is that B?

It is a 100% natural fertilizer (treated human waste..) that you can pick up at Home Depot or any landscape retailer. IMO, it works awesome! My grass is extremely thick and green.

Interesting thing about Milorganite , and yes it is refined Milwaukee sewage ,
it keeps the deer out of the yard!!
Deer= long legged rats. They're thick around here.

I threw a few bags on the yard about 1-month ago,( about 3/4 acre mowable ) and so far the deer haven't been in the yard to eat the Hostas (Hosta's; a deer salad bar :face-icon-small-dis ) or the rest of the plants.

Otherwise I have to keep the garden and flower beds covered with chicken wire fencing.

Oh, BTW it makes the grass look nice too.:D

This guy's got it right. Milorganite is a very nice product to use when you're looking for 'dark' green grass. It contains a decent amount of iron which is what will take the yellow-ish tint away from your existing turf.

You can also spread a more traditional product (like Scott's turf builder) at the same time you spread Milorganite. What I like to do is spread North-South with Milorganite and then spread regular fert East-West. You get optimal coverage that way.

I work for an agricultural chemical retailer/fert plant.

Helena Turf Nectar

Good shot of nitrogen, also has some sulfur, iron, and a little zinc. I sell it for about $8.00/gallon.

Nice! Are you the only ones selling it or do you have distributors? I'd like to try some.

I get it from a distributor. This is the company that I get it from.

Helena Chemical

They have a dealer locator on their webpage that you can break it down by zip code or state. Good luck!
Here's the list of dealers in minnesota, hope one is close to you. Or find your nearest ag chem retailer that sells helena chemicals.

I am rep for them here and there but I don't/cant sell in that area. I am in the north west part of the state... Call down there and ask for dave bastian and he will be able to help you out. we have chemicals and fertilizer to grow or kill anything. Our eagan Location is the only location that deals strictly with Professional Turf grass (golf courses, sports fields) we also do a lot of business with land scape companies. Our prices are typically cheaper than Home depot. We have a lot of old inventory we need to move at very low prices. Just let him know what you need are looking to do.
