ok, so I know that this type of question has been asked alot, but since all the talk of the ktm300, I am beginning to change thoughts on next years bike. 2003-2008ish wr450 or ktm300. both can have e start and lights, the ktm has slightly more hp and less weight, but I am guessing less mpg. I almost am thinking the 4 stroke might be more maintenance. any thoughts?

thanks for the info

Tom the 300 that I ride with is an 08 XCW which has a 2.9 gallon tank. He also packs 3 gallons on the tunnel when we ride and if its a long day with a lot of miles he will use almost all of his fuel. We rode yesterday out of Sandpoint and put in a long day probably covered 40 miles of all offroad backcountry riding. I went through about 4 gallons of fuel on my 525 and he probably burned 5 gallons. The 300 is going to burn more fuel no doubt about it but its not that hard to pack fuel either.

Good info however its in the jetting. My stock 300 jetting would only go 22 miles on a gallon. Get the jetting correct and those change considerably.I would also like a comparison between the two bikes in" performance" only since I,m considering the kit as well

Having owned 2 300s I will say you can for sure up the mileage to compete with a non FI 4 stroke via jetting. I got both of mine to where I could not empty the tank without being too tired in a single huge loop. Really this comes down to 2 stroke vs 4 stroke and I would say here are the factors. If you are a smaller guy the 300 feels light(if you are smaller maybe the 250xc with a pvalve mod is actually the better bike) but for me the 300 excels where it is tight. Once I got onto 4 strokes I couldn't get back to feeling the way the 300 is almost too light and deflects so much so I ride the 4 strokes but when I go to the mtns with my buddies on their 300xcs with autoclutch I am very jealous. IF you ride tight stuff a 300 with an autoclutch has got to be the biggest cheater bike made
