Ktm 300 Questions....

MtnDoo, You checked out the N2O/ methanol injection kits from Boss? That is going to be the next step for my 300 build. Supposedly the methanol will drop egt 200 degrees and constantly dries out the fuel system as it is Alcohol. I think a 10 shot should be sufficient.

My snow here in Colorado is not quite Utah snow but it is the closest thing to it for reference.

I started this season with a LT on a lazy enduro style FX450 and was so impressed how well the lower power transferred to the snow on the 450. We all thought it would be a DOG but it held its own with the FE570's all day long until wide open drag races. Then mid season I installed a ST on this same FX450 and the rev's came on faster and it became mor sporty. It was a go anywhere bike with the LT and then became FUN with the ST.

Now to your 300. I also have a MtnDoo inspired hot rod 2014 300XC with an SX. THIS BIKE IS THE MOST FUN I HAVE EVER RIDDEN!!!!!! I have been a lazy 4stroke rider all my life and had to learn how to ride a 2stroke. It is a completely different world. I have not ridden a 300 LT, but I would think you would have to be amazing on the clutch to be able to ride this setup and have FUN. The LT transfers the power so well it will load the motor all the time and not let that 300 run free with track spin in a way I like. I would recommend the ST for the 300. You will not have to work as hard to keep it in the power and it will feel much more like a birt bike with the ST, and that is why we build 300's. If we want to go any where we build Enduro style lazy 4strokes. If we want to blast through the trees with our hair on fire and branches sticking out of our helmets we build 300's.
If you had to buy a new bike for the kit, You would buy the 300 over the 4 stroke? Or building 300,s because you already had them?

Myself I have a 300 that has everything already... Rekluse, metered carb, sx kit, magic button....... But if I like it this year most likely I will be going to a cr500 with a metered type carb.... They are cheap to get power from and cheap to fix...

Hmm . A big 2 stroke , That will likely be better than the 450 4,s that for awhile everyone said was the ticket? I bet loads of power and lite?I need to buy a dedicated bike for this and already have a KTM 300 for single track.

That's my thought process, just picked up a CR500 to be dedicated to the timbersled. Seems like a good application for a large bore 2-stroke!

That way I can keep my 300 for the trails and my 530 for dualsporting.

Is there any huge differences between 2007 vs 2008 ktm 300 in snowbike (timbersled) use? 2008 exc have new frame vs 2007, but do i get any benefits to riding experience if i buy -08 model?

I would think they are pretty close and the differences are minimal.... I would still look into porting and milling the head when you rebuild though... I know for the earlier years it helps a lot...

E-start on some of the '08s. However I would avoid it as they are a very poor design...

The chassis and suspension are both much nicer but I'm guessing would be negligable in the snow.

Thanks to you both! E-start is not necessary to me.

We ride on trails too, so how much 300 with ST eats fuel on trails? I know that in powder only sky is the limit.

Sorry can't tell you that we have very limited roads it is all back country where I am.... From what I have seen if you want a good long day you will use about 5 gallons or so.... Simular to dune riding as far as fuel economy... I would assume on roads you would get much better. I usually get for regular riding anywhere from 80 to 95 miles to a tank.... Keep in mind I run a Lectron carb so I think that improves my mileage..

wwill, where did you get your timber sled from? Trying to get more snow bike riders together in utah. It's a small, but growing bunch.
