Kootenay Region - Nelson/Castlegar area

Haven’t made it out yet, more snow would be great not into banging up the sleds have to go to higher ground not much down at the cabin Salmo side. Planning a few good rides before Christmas hopefully it keeps snowing and good dump fresh POW is in the works. Anyone been up Marble / Siwash ?

Maybe this thread is the lucky charm cause it started snowing in town when I posted it and hasn't stopped yet hahaha

Finally got out for a good ride yesterday....still not a ton of snow for stump/tree coverage, but enough to have some fun. We got into a little lake up Giveout creek near Nelson that no one had been in yet this year and it was DEEP....spent a good hour tracking it all to hell and falling in the 5 feet of pure fluff. Great fun.

Where's everyone been?

Little Help

Looking to make a trip to the Nelson area about mid february with my girlfriend and was wondering about some areas to ride around there.I was looking at going to the Empire but she is pretty much a road and meadow rider and I like to boondock and climb. Not looking for any of your honeyholes or secret spots just some general pointers for a 3 day vacation. We will be staying at Ainsworth Hot Springs. Thanks for any advice or help.

Pops said it ain't worth it yet as the base needs to setup a bit but it should be good to go just about everywhere in 2 weeks. Hope they get some more snow soon though. Coming back at the end of Jan.

Started raining in town (Trail) today and still raining tonite in the BV area (2000'), hope it sets up a base up top and brings down some loose crap before the snow comes in this weekend.

Castlegar area/Avy course

Trying to see if there is enough interest to set up a date to have an introductory recreational avalanche course. The Castlegar Snowmobile Association arranged the last one 3 years ago and 16 people attended. The course was instructed by John Tweedy/Kootenay Snow Safety Services and involved 4-5 hours of classroom theory and then a full day in the mountains. I have talked to John and he is willing to do the course again if there is enough interest. Need 6-8 people to make this happen...so PM me and I will start a list. The last one was done over 3 days- Friday night (Classroom theory as an entire group) and then split into 8 person groups for the Sat/Sun. Feedback from all attendees was very positive and course was definitely sledder specific. Not sure of exact price ($150 max... depending on #'s) Let me know...

Tentatively interested depending on dates and work schedual. Very interested but very for me to get saturdays off.

Do you know if I could come for, say, the friday night theory and the sunday field work?

Last time we did it John took half the class saturday and the rest sunday so should be able to work something out,he took us to Ladybird last time and told us the area is like playing with a tiger, when you take the course you will know what that means. With the conditions the way they are this year he may not want to go there, but will take us out somewhere,we tried different brands of beacons, did probe lines, very good i think i may go again as a refresher, hope to never use some of the skills taught but need to be prepared for the worst. thx wayne

Graham:

PM sent, I'm in for a refresher for sure depending on dates (you'll prolly hate me but I booked a Chris Burandt trip the end of Feb. can't wait). Might be able to scare up a couple more if needed. Thanks for putting this together, this is important stuff.

Coxy.........Got a new ride?

Looking forward to seeing you guys soon. EW

Just got off the phone with John-looking at the last weekend of Jan. Will do classroom on Friday night(31st) and then go out Sat/Sun to Ladybird area for the hands on. Sounds like there is a mix of people-those who have never taken it before and others in for a refresher. Cost will be $100.00( very reasonable!). He can bring out a variety of beacons and equipment for people to try also. This is a great oppurtunity to see what's out there if you haven't purchased yet. Requirements are that you have a vehicle/sled to access the backcountry and that you bring whatever you have in the way of equipment (beacons, probes, shovels and packs). Not sure of what else is going on that weekend in the way of other club functions/poker runs and/or peoples schedules, but hopefully this works out. Still taking names and #'s to add to the list. Will also be looking at people to pay prior to the course in order to establish actual #'s and ensure commitments. Any other questions, post here or PM me.

Thanks,
Graham

Can't beat Avalanche training up Ladybird!

I'm telling my wife it's a week long... so no one blow my cover!

Just kidding but count me in for the weekend of the 31st.

Sent PM

training

come on guys let's take this course;we have tried for the last 3 years to do this lack of support=no course ; this may be your butt we are saving or maybe mine.the course is $100.Funny how guys will spend $11,000 on a sled can put fuel in it and buy refreshments but won't pay to take a course or pay trail passes{new subject} thx wayne

Update: Avy course

Just waiting to hear from John. Have replied to everyone that has PMed me.(Thanks, guys!) There is still room for a couple more and from past experience some always drop out at the last minute. Anyone interested...give me your name and # and I will add it to the list. As soon as I hear from John, I will be contacting everyone and letting them know how to get $'s to me in order to confirm their spot. I have to do this to ensure commitment( once again from past experience... nothing like having someone jam 2 hrs before/not even show up! Don't need the hassle of trying to get last minute replacements.) This is something that everyone should know(this includes whoever you ride with..). I am not sure if there will be another course later this year- I will take names and try my best to put together another one if there is enough demand!

Talked to John tonight-the course is a go ahead. Will be having the class portion at the Castlegar rec center(waiting to have confirmation on which room) on Friday, Jan 31st from 6:00 till 10:00. Will then split class up into max 8 person groups for Sat/Sun (PM or phone me if you have preference and I will try to accomadate if possible) Needless to say, it makes sense to have non-locals to do the Sat session unless they are into making it a sledding weekend. I have compiled a list of over 16 names and will be contacting them. The cost is $100.00(80.00 us) and must be paid in full prior to the start. It will be on a first pay/first in basis in order to ensure full commitment. There is room for 16 people and so if anyone can't make it, I will let others know. I am still taking names so if you are interested, PM me.

Thanks
