Knee Protection

So I hurt my knee last year during a crash off a drift. It has healed and no pain uless I hit it smack center on my kneecap. Any suggestions on something I could wear under my snowpants for a little protection? I rode the rest of the season with a fleece jacket folded and taped to my knee, worked well but a little on the bulky side of things.

I don't want anything hard, just something to soften the blow. Anybody use something like this? Thoughts? http://www.allsportprotection.com/Pro_Tec_IPS_Snowboard_and_Ski_Knee_Pads_p/prtc0033.htm

Those AllSport pads look like they would work, but do they come off with velcro, or slide off? If they could velcro across the back of the leg you might have better adjustability and the option to install or remove it during the day without taking your pants and boot off. Hopefully it wouldn't ride down with wear and distract you while riding.

I really like these. I won't ride without them! $15-20

I have had a couple sets now and I agree that getting something that you do not have to slide on before you boot up is the way to go. Someone told me years ago to go to a bike shop and try on all the different ones made for downhill mtn biking and that was smart. They protect and are not rigid. Also tried a motocross shop. Sixsixone makes some good stuff. I highly suggest you try things on before you buy. Motocross stuff looked awesome but all of it turned out to be way too restrictive for me. Go to the bike store!

you kneed a cup type ,a hard shell to cover the whole knee cap the fox units have a shin guard as part of the complete unit PROTECT your knees so you dont have to buy expensive ones

Steph... I agree with the comments above...how they fit is important. You are a petite gal, so you might have to do some shopping around.

The ones you've chosen look nice but try them on and make sure that you can wear them for the whole day.

Skinz Protective Gear makes some good soft pads... check out their MTB section... they also might be able to custom taylor it if you have a fit issue.

Why the aversion to a hard protection??

I'm a big advocate of a good knee protection system... especially since you have said that you really want to step up your jumping game. The POD-MX braces are a great OTS (off the shelf) knee brac that you can put on and take off with your boots still on. It is one of the nicest OTS braces I've seen and are super comfy.

These new braces are Carbon fiber, light and fit well. Much better than the Asterisk knee protection.

Take it from a old guy with bad knees... protect what you got before you wake up with too many creaks and cracks in the morning...

They will pay for themselves in motrin and Ice packs alone.

Well I think I'm already messed up, lol. Such is life though.

The fleece coat worked very well and aside from the bulk it I could hit my knee/pull handle on the front panel all day and not hurt. I guess I'm afraid of adding anything hard to the mix and am thinking I would rather not have a brace at this point, My knee is great except for example when I whack it on a flatbed at work. Not good....

Lots of interesting pads to research... the gform is cool. But yeah, going to have to try stuff on. Thanks guys!

Not sure what kinda riding gear you have, but i just picked up some Klim bibs and the ones i got have a bit of padding in the knee and shin. My dad has them and he said it helps when you hit your knee. It might just be enough to be able to help the pain if you hit your knee. I believe that mine are the togowtee (sp) but i would have to look to make sure... Just an option incase you dont want a brace

I asked the ortho doc about extra knee protection and he said most of the rigid brace systems only protect againt hyperextension and don't do much if anything for twisting protection.

Protection against hyperextension is good though.

Last year I wore MX style pads. Saved my shins a few times.

Just make sure the knee cup is comfortable on your knee while kneeling on the seat or ground.

custom CTI with patela cups NOT CHEEP 4250.00pr very very good protection
and I can walk at the end of the day

I just use a cheap pair of Shift MX knee/shin guards. You don't need much, I mean you could even just go buy a pair of kids skateboard knee pads at Wal Mart even and it would do it.

That is what I'm wearing... CTi2 Vapor Sports with the patella cups... I only paid $1800 for the pair (cash). Custom fit thru my orthopod.

I have bad ACL's and weak Medial Collaterals on both knees with some other damage... My CTi's (as well as Good OTS braces like the Pod-MX) protect from side loading impacts, and twisting injuries.

Heck.. Many pro hockey players, Football players (college and PRO) and most pro MX riders with HEALTHY knees wear good knee protection braces.
