Killing the nun

How many of us have had to replace the nun on our skidoos', seems like a pretty weak part to me. What other parts did u need to do the job. How much does the dealer charge to do it? I have heard using the nun off of a 440 racer is an option and it is much stronger

nun

I just smoked mine in Larimie this weekend got home this morning slep for a few hours and tore mine apart took a bit but its not that bad . yes mine was a mess .The sled wouldnt turn right and the left ski was about 4 inches back from the right . my new parts should be in on thursday. Now as for as the parts from a 07 440x the only diff is a few support brakets .I got mine for 236.00 i think ret. is 296.00

I got a 07 MXZX 440 racer, and about a week after I had it I noticed the damn ski was back, so I had to replace the nun, and the front motor plate. I WAS PISSED!

After it was complete it is alright now, Have taken it off of a few jumps and hauled *** through a wooped out trail and no problems as of yet.

Just take your time and do it right.

Use bolts to put it back together as it will save you time if you have to do it again in the future.

I bent my nun on 12/23/08, along with the secondary air chamber, nun support plate, and alot of plastic damage.

I've doen a few including my own. got the new nun and put all the 440 brackets in to help. Not to bad of a job.
Go with the bolts or use crush rivets when you do it. Really recomend beefing up behind the can as well. seen many revs buckle there.

Started looking at these posts about the XP's checked mine and my LH spring is only 1/4" from the A arm. Can't see anything bent, and the only time I remember hitting anything hard with that ski it wasn't too bad.

Is it fair to say if you get the new center piece it is just a bolt in deal (after you grind/cut the old rivets out) and everything should line up again?

nun

Im doing my nun and back support plate now i have the new plate about in its not a complete bolt in deal, they give you a few holes to line things up .... kinda You will still be required to do some drilling im trying stainless nuts and bolts and a few rivits .I guess ill see how it goes ,like anything the first time is always the hardest.

my right ski tip caught under something rotated down and upper a-arm came forward bending the shock. Bought shocks off an xp ($190) and new 07 440x nun is on the way, also ordered the corner braces, with shipping it ran $270. So roughly a $500 mishap...this all happened when I let a friend ride it who had never been on a sled before...doh! Since i have owned my rev i have learned that i have to pay hard to play hard! lol

repairing one now, bulkhead repair $300, nun (whatever they cost), plus a ski, and a upper and lower A arms...

How many hours do they charge for?

I am curious to see what the dealerships / shops are charging for shop time hours to change out a nun.....????????

Big John? anyone? anyone?

I hit a large rock with mine . . hard enough to throw me off the sled. It took out the lower & upper a-arms and bent the shock, but the rest is perfect . . no bent nun. Ended up picking up a front end from a guy that installed after market parts, so I have a set of a-arms, spindles for both sides, and one shock available if anyone needs one. I would say it took the hit pretty well . . the last time I hit that hard I had a trailing arm in my clutch.

For total shop time to take apart the entire front end, replace nun, and put back together you are looking at $85/hour x 4-6 hours (depending on how fast/good mechanic is) = $510.
Parts; nun is $252.49, support plate $32.49, and all the plastic body parts to be replaced (that is if you have damage done to body) $121.

I did a number on my skid and had to put a claim in on my insurance, so my quote I got from dealer to make the skid like new again and that it never happened was $1,226.28 . That is everything including plastics, decals, and all the fastners. Luckily I only am out of pocket $250 for my deductable.

Yeah it can vary, it seems

It really depends upon how bad it was smashed, bent twisted, or just plain beat to death. Some of them I have seen have the motor mounts bent when the front plate gets shoved back from a direct hit to the front lower edge on something inanimate. Then you get into trying to align the clutches, with big levers, and body tools.

I was mainly just wndering how long it takes a good wrench to do it. I just did my first one and it took six hours, and I felt like I was taking too long, but I fix, straighten, every flange or whatever to make it all fit right. I had to do some welding too but that was on the side.

Thanks again.:beer;

where to look

my little bro bent something on his the other day a-arms look good but where does the bend show up the left ski is pushed back a couple inches, shock es close to a-arm no breaks by chaincase just doesnt seem to be bent but some thing is. WHERE SHOULD WE LOOK????/???? the sled is an 08 xp thanks to all that give there 2 cents or imo

right next to the can, maybe a little bit forward of it

Now I have done it

Imagine this: Lift the skis off of a whoop, skis are turned left, and smash. Set the right ski down on the corner of a rock right at the spindle. All the force pushes straight up the a-arm and shears the rear lower mount bolt. This is a first for me. So what is a nun? Here is what I can notice. I can see the bend behind the can, a bend in the front cross member down by the lower a-arm front mount. A crease above the hole that the tie rod exits. and that is the best that I can tell.

This sucks, I have had harder hits, but that force right at the spindle with no ski flex cost me. Any thoughts?

So when you crease your sled behind the muffler, is there a reinforcement you can buy to put on after you beat it back out straight? Ghostrider pretty much boresighted a tree with the center of the right A arm going about 30mph.. bent the upper a arm slightly, but pushed back the entire right side of the sled about 2 inches..

i would replace the whole crossmember..not just beat it back into place, because it would never become perfect again, and much weaker than it already is... replace the nun, and i was told by my dealer to not reinforce the nun because if you were to hit something again and it was reinforced you could F- upthe bulkhead which is alot more that 230 bux...

New nun is in place and now I can see that the a-arm is bent also!
