Just got back from my 154X's 1st ride, Togwotee, All went well!

Just arrived home from my 1st trip with my 154X and it ran great all week. Was pulling 7900-8100 rpm's in the deep with no belt issues(stock belt) although the clutches did run hot. I did break in the belt as suggested by another forum member which was
1) Cleaning the belt & clutches thoroughly & run the sled(ON THE TRAIL) for 5 miles, never exceeding 7000 rpm's and then let the clutch(s) cool.
2) Run the sled for another 5 miles never exceeding 8000 rpm's and then let the clutch(s) cool.
3) Lastly, run the sled another 5 miles giving a few WOT bursts for 3-4 seconds and then letting the clutch(s) cool.

After that, I hit the steep and deep with no holding back. I had no hand-warmer issues(I had the update done before I left) and did not experience any oil cap leaking issues either(as some have been experiencing).

Here is the rest of the set-up/changes from stock that I ran:

1) Primary: 12mm & 6mm threaded inserts installed in all 3 pins. Clickers in #3 position.

2) 20T upper gear.

Looks like you had a good trip !! Your buddy must of dusted the cat and went turbo. I see you found the sheep by Juiles Bowl

If your only hitting 7900 RPM at WOT you will build way more heat than at 8200 RPM. This is one of many problems with the XP. Thought you might like to know !

wow sounds like a great trip. my dad and i just got back from there this last sunday and and im pretty sure we were cursed. our truck broke down on the way out there, we got towed twice in one day, stayed the night in douglas wyoming and waited for our rescue truck to come pick us up, the next day we were driving up to go riding and smoked a deer, then we got to the mountain and I smoked a tree on my new XP and bent the handlebars 15 minutes into the ride, then my dads throttle broke on his M1000 and the throttle stuck open and it pulled a ghostrider into a tree totalling the front end. it was one of the worst trips in history but the snow was real good. the good news about the trip was that my XP 154 was highmarking the M1000's in our group on the Brecca Cliffs so im not mad about the sled at all. sounds like you had a good break in session. keep up the posting.

Nice pics! It's hard to tell from them, but the coverage looks a little thin.

A bunch of the later pics were from the top of Austin Peak and other hilltops around Jules Bowl, so yeah the snow was thin up there. But everywhere else it was quite good. No lack of powder in the meadows or valley play areas around Union Pass. In many places it was deep enough that you couldn't walk... you had to crawl or roll around. I almost had a heart attack getting unstuck on the top of Fish Mountain.

This is one of my favorite pics. If you only could tell how steep that is and what it took to get up there! If you look in the lower right you can see John turning around about 1/4 way down the mountain since I was stuck at this point and our buddy was stuck just above me.

summitboy,
Thanks for the info. What would you suggest changing/adjusting so that I achieve the 8200 RPM's & reduce the belt heat? Should I simply adjust the clickers up one setting to #4 or would this be too easy of a way to achieve this?

Thanks much,
-John

Glad you have a great time John!

The set-up you have is where you want to be. How many miles on the sled now?
  • Clean the primary since this was your maiden voyage.
  • Track is loose enuf?
  • Clutchs clean?
  • Your TRA clickers are for elevation changes, Don't be afraid to click up to 4 or even 5 when you get to 10,000 feet, THATS what they are for :D. You want to be about 8250 on the tach since they show high from DOO, meaning if it sez 8000 on the tach, your actual RPM is about 7850.
p.s. ........... Listening to summitboy, is like putting a bolt in backwards, "It might fit, but it ain't right" ;)

Approx 300 miles on the sled now. Thanks again for the detailed information Slim.
