I just finished up my avalanche training today. Did a full day in the classroom yesterday learning about everything from human psychology (why we do stupid things even though we know better), understanding snow pack and weather etc. Then all day in the field today doing rescue training.
The first thing I would like to say is that it was totally worth it. My last avy training was 14 years ago, and to say I was due for a refresher is an understatement. I feel much more confident now in my ability to find a buried victim with a beacon and the proper way to dig them out. We also trained on multiple burials (with and without beacons) and probe lines.
The second thing I would like to say is how absolutely humbling it was to realize that perhaps the biggest detriment to my riding partners would be my physical condition. Hiking up and down the mountain today, all day, was brutal. I will be doubling down on my cardio exercise (I already exercise an hour a day every day but more on resistance training than cardio).
For you Alaskans out there, I highly recommend training with the Alaska Avalanche School. They have a number of classes scheduled, and their training is top-notch. They have even added snowmobile specific training and have courses for that in January and February.
