JUST CAME FROM OKANOGAN WINTER REC MEETING , SNOWMOBILE SIDE

keep what we have

All these ideas and comparing to Canada are great, but we have one of the best systems and we should work harder at keeping the system we have and building it up ie... surveys, charging for passes, and keeping WA state parks as the organizer... legislation and the use of public and private lands is not the same here as it is in Canada, state parks and the few people that have stayed in it have done a good job and built a great system, its up to us to continue to build that.... and we have failed! Are you a WSSA member? Are you a club member? Have your wrote your rep., about the bill that is about to pass that would end all winter rec? if you cant say yes to those, you dont care! all you find time for is to bit** on here. Bad things are coming down the pipe, we need maintain what we have or the changes you think are good ie...fee collectors, clubs wont ever happen because people dont care!... we loose state parks in this mix we loose everything! there is not enough people out there that take the time to maintain this program... got to get involved! if we survive this bill and the additional 12% cut this should be an eye opener to all! 1600 people in survey results! what a joke 27K registered sleds and thats all that care to take the time to respond and i can only imagine the few the did that survey 3 and four times??
What survey?

Dan, do you know what the grooming contractors get for an entire season of grooming out of one snowpark? i.e. is it $20K to groom Gold Creek for a winter? If they only collected on weekends, 80 sleds per weekend at $10 each would give about $13K over a 4 month season. 40 sleds a day is low on a busy day, but maybe a decent average over the whole season? What about the smaller snowparks like Manastash, some of the stuff up the Methow, etc. Would they be sustainable? Subsidized by the bigger ones?

Current registration numbers for the State are like 30K, right? $30 each is $900K. How is this money divided currently? What are statewide operating costs?

ok, some quick figures from the area's I have the info
greenwater gets $63,00
I-90 stampede, $ 87,000
kaches / gold creek, $20,000
whatcom area $ 24,000
taneum / manastash $ 98,000
teannaway / bluett $ 36,000
mt st helens $ 34,000
skagit county $ 55,000
and so on,
this is just the grooming money, does not include plowing sanitation and other services needed. and I still dont think its fesible to have some one at a snopark "taking" money 7 days a week. Maybe at baker where there is virtually one way in. but tell me a club who's going to do that ? just sayin

I agree, I believe it's very problematic to have tolls in each sno park.

Seems to me the easiest way is to increase registration fees. I don't mind paying more if I get something in return.

However, I also understand the concern over funds being stolen, yes, stolen and disolved into the general fund.

Seems to be the same old thing. We have to decide if we are going to do the right thing or not, dispite the risk of the other person not doing what they are supposed to.

I'm for doing the right thing, dispite being tired of being taken advantage of by others.

need to pay more..

I'm with ya Dan. Since the last registration increase our gas prices alone have probably doubled or more... I am for paying more per sled when I register the sleds seems pretty straight forward to me.

Didn't want to let this one die as many here have given great input. Thanks Dan for your time and energy, also thanks Tar for your ideas and work. This does not have to be one way or another, I too have spent my time at the state, county and club levels and think there is more that can be done. Spent 5 days straight up in BC paying $40 a day ($20 ea.) and didn't think twice. Just came back from McCall and gave them $32.50 x 2 for the right to ride a nice groomed path and thought it to be a bargin. Have spent time on a club operated groomer in Oregon and was very impressed how their system works. I don't have the answers but do think we need to keep our minds open.

thanks dan

I am a member of WSSA, go to the show every year, and donate extra money to WSSA every year. I have attended groomer meetings, and given my opinions. At this point, I think I have not spent enough time supporting a sport that has become an addiction to me and my family. Dan spends an amazing amount of time supporting snowmobiling, and his dedication makes me feel like it is time to step up to the plate.

lots of stuff works everywhere else

Tar, if you have been around the grooming program, do you know there are basicall 3 people in state parks ( who actulally get paid year round ) ( and probably another 10 to 15 who do it for free ) who manage our money for the motorized and non motorized programs, ? Our money does not go into some black hole, as I explained early , every dime is accounted for, come to a meeting and you can get the spread sheet, it's all public, and as for charging at the snoparks with a kiosk or club people taking money, ????: you've got to seriously be kidding, We have 101 snoparks in the state of washnington, You expect to put someone at all of them collecting money ?? how much do you think 101 kiosk would cost, ? do they run off batteries or do we have to run power to them, Do you feel safe letting all your club members handling thousands of dollars in cash ? Think this thru, it's just not possible with a state the size of ours and all the snoparks, not bashing on you I promis, but it's just not possible. Also are the club members going to pay the snowplow driver, the sanican people , the land owners that we have to get permission from every year to use their property. Law enforcement to make sure everyone has a registered sled and snopark permit, there is just so much more to the snowmobile program that most people dont think about, It's not just about grooming, you have to get there first !
