Factory updates

2007
Motor mounts from an 06 - 06 mounts are a good upgrade
Chain case from an 06 - ??? Chain cases are ENTIRELY different from 05 to 06, NOT possible to interchange
Steering linkage - ???
Oil injection system - Oil cable replacement perhaps? if so, Good
Fuel pump - most likely the fuel pump float recall - if so, good

2008
Drive shaft - ???
Radiator - Radiator delete is good for deep snow riding conditions

2009
New crate engine from Polaris , all crank problems were revised in 09 - Most likely a 32mm crank kit, which is good
Injectors 4 instead of 2 - not really possible to do on an 05 due to interference from the steering, would also have to replace the ECU... not sure why anyone would put an 06 motor in an 05???
Primary clutch - most likely updated to large taper with new crank kit
Secondary clutch - No advantage that I know of to change the secondary??? Perhaps just a helix change

This is the list he gave me sound right?

Replies above in bold... a few upgrades listed sound good, a couple have me really confused as to why or how they would have been performed.

I'm afraid I don't understand???

Is it possible to post a couple pictures of the sled?

like seth stated.

not possible to get an 06 motor in an 05 chassis without MAJOR fab work.

i have 06 cylinders on an 05 bottom end in an 05 chassis and its not something many people know of or can do...

so pics would be great, have a feeling you have an 06 chassis

I agree, it's starting to sound more and more like he has an 06 and not an 05. There are a couple minor, but unmistakeable differences from 05 to 06 that can be determined with a couple pictures of the sled.

Ways to tell an 05 900 from an 06 900

-Manufacture date on the tunnel should read 2004 for an 05 or 2005 for an 06

-Oil bottle on an 05 is seperate from the coolant bottle, on 06 the coolant bottle is molded to fit snugly into the side of the oil bottle.

-Jackshaft and secondary are noticeably higher on an 05, than on an 06.

-Tunnel reinforcement plate is almost twice the size for 05 as it was in 06.

-Rear bar of the upper A-Arms on 05s are completely straight, rear bar of upper A-Arms on 06 has an approximately 10* bend 2 inches from the end on o6.

-If it has stock plastics, there should be several 50th anniversary decals on the 05, and a numbered one on dash of the blue sleds.

-Stock 05 spindles had IQ stickers on them and were curved similar to a crescent moon to the outside.

(05 spindles shown in first engine pic above)

Likely your chaincase has been upgraded to cast instead of plastic, as the plastic ones had a habit of melting from being too close to the exhaust.
When Polaris redid my 05 motor because of the usual failed crank, they offered a choice of a crate motor, or rebuild the stock one with an upgraded crank and newer style barrels and pistons, SLP mounts and torque stops, which is the way it went, and like 94FG said, updated clutch.
most 2005's have this stuff done because of failure or recalls, but makes them into the great sled they are. Or the one one i have is anyways...

The stock airbox has always been touted as a very free-flowing setup for as bulky as it appears, you can remove all the guts from it if you like, but all you will do is save 1 or 2 lbs of plastic. Otherwise a Fire-N-Ice is the best aftermarket intake available.

the stock airbox's only real problem is that it blocks so much air flow from getting to the clutch / belt area. I'll give a solid vote for a Fire n Ice box! Loved mine, the belt temps went down significantly.

The other bad thing about the stock airbox was that it also doubled as the clutch guard. With these sleds also being known for blowing belts.....it was possible that a blown belt would break the airbox and the motor would directly ingest belt chunks and belt dust. Not really something you want going through your engine. I also would recommend the FNI intake.
