Jones Pass 5.9.13

yesterday, Jay & I spent the last 3 hours of daylight on the POW at Jones. my first time out at jones, gnar gnar!!!!! at least foot of fresh snow that nobody played in... we took care of that! also, the parking lot wasn't plowed so the ride begins there. maybe jay will chime in on conditions. i guess the season isn't over until mother nature or your sled says so :)

late day sesh

no boarding... it was my first time to jones and honestly the place was waaaay gnar & was mcgyvering my way out of being stuck a bit and we didn't get on the snow until after 6pm. the latest snow is heavy, sitting on top of fluff, fought a lot on those side hills & climbs... whew! took a good tumble and my knee is brightly colored shades of blue and purple this am. sooooo with all that digging and bruises.... i think we'll do another late day sesh out at jones today on our way up to breck LOL.... Still doing montezuma on sunday, i'm hoping for some good boarding then :)

I think I'm going to hit jones by myself tomorrow unless others join. I know the place real well but still cool to get some miles on the sled and its only 1hr 15 from boulder. quick cheap round trip for a little early may rip

Yeah dont ride alone.

Especially on jones pass. That place is some of the worst avy country in the state.

Friday @ Jones & Sunday at Montezuma

Rode Jones on Friday after work, great coverage and we got pretty much first dibs on tracking up the area, i had a great play session working on getting my tracks off the ground :)

Sunday at Montezuma was just great happy fun times with several families/friends joining us. Just one other sledder coming from Georgia Pass perhaps, yes that's just how good the coverage was. Amazing times. You can see we had some sliding snow for the big boy boarding runs, last 2 pics are Montezuma.

be carefull

That place is fun! but that is a place is line a big snake. you never know when it is going to come out and bite you!!!!! i would be verry carefull anytime riding that place! but this time of year is scarry, new snow dosent like to stay where it is laying. i ride that place a bunch but would not even try it this time of year.

Montezuma

hey hillside :) yep the last two pics i posted were up at Montezuma by keystone. those big boy boarding runs did have a good bit of shifting snow and only the very experienced were taking those runs. not sure about Tiger rd., i'll look into that. sad that may be the last trip out for the season ;(

Looks like some sweet shoots to hit. where is that? Montezuma by Keystone? Does that meet up with Tiger rd?

caution fo sho

vahillbilly, thanks so much for the words of caution. i don't think people can hear words of caution enough, nobody should forget that each time you go in the back country you are subject to natural dangers, no matter what your skill level is. i think you're talking about jones... and yes, you're so right about the place. as we were heading up on friday to jones we gave it a 50/50 chance we would actually get out on the snow because it looked like from a distance there was too much cloud coverage. but we got there and it was fine. we would have turned around and decided not to ride if the weather wasn't cooperating. we rode there on thursday and friday last week between 6-8pm on both days and the snow was so different each time. that just shows that you have to assess a place each time you ride, can't count on it being the same place you rode, even the day before. i'm a beginner so i just rode the open meadow areas, no side hilling. my boyfriend jay rode more but is a CO guy that's been doing back country stuff for 20 years. we both have beacons, avy gear and he rides with a float pack. thanks again for raising a caution flag, there's good reason for it.

Yes, it does meet up with Tiger Road. The coverage up high is excellent, so getting to Tiger Road should be easy. We started some low speed sluffs with snowboards on the steep east facing slopes, but it was limited to the new snow.

I may have to do a final ride of the year in montezuma next week if there is snow to access the area. Looks sweet, what a beautiful photo you posted. I've heard it is sketchy up there but holy smokes, i never realized how open it is. I bet there aren't many sleds up in that area.

a great season in the books... jones one last time 6.6.13

what a fantastic first year i've had sledding... i can't believe i caught sled fever so badly... this is definitely the beginning of a life long passion for me... i'm happy to have ridden so much this year... about 800 miles :)

you have to be a real snow slut to go out in june but we did it... it was a bit of a challenge to creep along the spotty trail but the snow was good and fun once we got on it... great coverage, didn't hit any rocks at all. sad the season is over but we have a pretty big sled list to keep us occupied for the summer, so those machines we love so much won't be far from our mind, hearts, or wallets :)
