Job Interview advice

Once you go, you'll know if it's something you want to do. If it is something you want to do, ask the interview for a card at the end of the interview and thank them for their time. It should have their name (obviously), address and phone/fax. The VERY NEXT DAY, send them a "thank you" via fax if possible, otherwise, mail. Thanking them for their time and let them know you want the job.

You'll be hired in 3-4 days.

Do what Larry says...

AND If you don't know the answer don't BS it.
Be honest and tell them you don't know the answer in the most dignified way you can.
Don't be a know it all.
Be humble.
Be someone that can work with anyone.
Be open to change.
Be open to suprises.
Be confident.
Have humility.

Great advice Sott.
A few others,
Look Nice and dress for the Job, IE if its construction don't show up in suit and Tie.
Avoid slang in your speach.
Be inthusiastic , no one wants to hire a stick in the mud.

Interesting, we are to begin interviewing some people for a job here. Here are a few things that we will be looking for in people,

Outgoing, even if you are working by yourself you have to prove that you work well with others. Qualifications, need to make sure that you are qualified and not over qualified. Make sure you come in and introduce yourself, look them in the eye, and give a firm handshake, (no dead fish handshake). During the interview answer their questions to the best of your abilities, if they ask you a question on something you dont know anything about, its best to just say you dont know anything about it. They can always train you, just be honest. In the end you should ask some sort of question, it may be hard, but it proves that you are interested in the job. Dont ask a question on the wage, not saying you cant discuss wage, just pick at least one question that is related to the job. Remember it is not what the company can do for you, its what you can do for the company, you can worry about that when they make an offer to hire you.

Dress well, dont come in your greasers even if it is a job as a greaser, clean up, shave, look good. Leave the Metallica shirt and the holy jeans behind.

These are just a few things that may help you, I dont want to be held responsible if you dont get the job:face-icon-small-win. If you dont get it just move on, it wasnt your fault, just means there is a better job out there for you!

Good luck and let us know how you do!

Good advice so far.
I dealt with this every year, as graduates from my electronics program were ready to look for a full time job in the field.

I would add , don't get into the wages and benefits until later in the actual interview, unless the interviewer brings it up sooner.
You don't want to seem TOO anxious, like " I really need this job 'cause I have a lot of bills."
Definite turn off for an employer.

As said, watch your speech patterns. Avoid the "likes", and "dudes".

Another thing, some employers, depending on the job, have a real turn off with body piercings. Ear rings, nose rings  etc etc. Leave the hardware at home, IMO.
One last thing, some employers may require a drug test, but that probably wouldn't happen at the first interview. They would likely make you a job offer based on successful drug test.

Good luck, and report back to the 4M. :)

In most interviews you will be asked:

"What are your strengths?" and "What are your weaknesses?"

Have answers ready for both. Good luck!

Another common interview question is "what are some of your goals" or "where do you see yourself in a year from now, 5 years, 10 years etc." so answer that for yourself now rather than during the interview.

look people in the eye when speaking to them.

be on time.

Leave the "so", "um", "like", "you know", "kind of", "sort of", "ya" chit at home.

Answer the question clearly and shut up.

The correct answer to this of course, " is celebrating the 5 year anniversary of you asking me this question".... Got to love Mitch Hedberg...

If you smoke, don't smoke before the interview... no one likes a stinker...
Don't be uptight, remember, it is just a job, there are a lot of them.....
Dress appropriately, clean shaven, and all....
Be very respectful, the guys interviewing you have more combined knowledge then you will every have.....

well I can tell you DO NOT call your interviewer "DUDE" . The last kid I interviewed did and as you could imagine that was it for him, But I did wish him a good afternoon DUDE!

LEARN something about the company you're interviewing for.... and demonstrate that you've done this at some point during the interview. This should be easy to do when the interviewer is describing the company and position they're hiring for to you.
And like ZZTop says --- clean shirt and NEW SHOES

Depending on what position you were hiring for..... this could be a pretty trivial thing to disqualify an otherwise pretty good applicant for. This is how people speak (not just kids) these days, and you might be missing the boat by not 'modernizing' with the times.
Sorry for the threadjack Racingpit.

The shut up part for sure.

Don't sell yourself with Blah Blah Blah Blah when they decided at Blah.

Oh yeah......the skirt thing too.

Make sure you ask some questions. (not about money though in a first) When someone will ask me a question it at least shows they have the ability to think and have thought about the job some.

.... ha, ha, ha...... this must be coming from someone in an HR dept. or does interviewing for government jobs :D
I agree...... be 100% respectful, but until someone proves their wisdom .... never ASSUME they are smarter than you are.
