Jackets for the Boondockers out there....

Well I decided to pull the trigger on a new jacket. I've had my eye on the Klim Valdez Parka for a while but that $400.00 price tag is hard to swallow. I'm totally fine paying for the product if it's really worth $400, but I'm interested to see what you all think about jacket options out there.

I'm looking for an active wear jacket that will be my main layer. I don't really ride much in sub-zero weather, but I might from time to time. I definitely work up a sweat boondocking so breath-ability is a must. Not really all that concerned with storage/pockets since I have plenty of pack room already. The jacket will be worn outside of riding (sometimes) so I want something that works for a night out at the bar or by the campfire.

The jacket I'm retiring is a Columbia that has lasted me 15 very hard years. I was blown away by how much abuse this thing went through, but it was made more for skiers/snowboarders than us motorized badasses. I really don't give a crap about matching but I have Klim gloves, bibs, and will be picking up a new pair of Adrenalin boots. Everything seems to be top notch so far with no complaints.

Thanks for the input!

I have been through a few of the Klim jackets.......with a tekvest and the way I layer I was always getting HOT.

My favorite up until now has been the powerxross pullover.

This year I have gone even more minimalist and pulled the trigger on their Stow Away jacket. Have been wearing it the last few weeks and think this is going to be the PERFECT light weight, gore-tex shell for backcountry riding.

Excited to try it out.

I love my Valdez, but honestly rarely use it for sledding.. I usually find myself grabbing the powderX pullover. Very roomy and keeps out the snow.. I also usually run a chest protector over the top, so I like the lighter less bulky PowderX..
I dont think you can go wrong with Klim.

I have the storm jacket, the valdez is way to warm for me. We don't have the sub zero temps. I must say that it is a very durable coat, I spend most of my time in the trees, and I mean in the trees!:becky: I can't believe that it has not been ripped or seams blown out. I have put this jacket threw hell. I have had other jackets that have lasted awhile but I end up ripping them some where. Usually in the sholder area. The klim has some tuff material to hold up to the dead branches, the green ones are usually a little softer. I hate to spend the money on gear that works and works well, but I do. I think that good clothes make for a better ride. your dry, warm and comfy, all day, makes for a better ride.

I have also looked at the Motor fist this yr. and seen some good points to there stuff. After seeing a demo, on there stuff I think it is more breathable than the gortex, but just as water proof. as far as holding up to wear and tear, well don't know. The price is about the same as Klim, but Klim has stood the test of time Motor fist is still preaty new.

just get the valdez and forget about it. the best jacket i have ever had. plenty of venting, tougher than nails and most importantly it keeps you dry. you should be able to find it for around 3-350 if you find a left over from last year. check around on the web

I would definately go with the Valdez or Tommahawk. I think these are both non-insulated coats. Do not go with any of their insulated stuff, it is just too dang hot. With Klim you know they are going to be around a long time and I have been told by my Cat dealer that they take good care of you if you have a warranty issue.

X 2 found myself wearing the powercross while the valdez stays in the truck.. Too Warm

I went from the Klim Valdez to the Tomahawk too, mostly for venting. I also bought a HMK Voyager last year that had been on par with the Klim gear.

Get ahold of Freeagent on here, which is Oregon trail sports. See has great service and great prices on Klim gear.

Awesome input folks!

I do need a jacket for the cold, wet days that we get up here. Sounds like the Valdez is a great jacket but a little on the warm side. That's ok with me since I'm a fan of shedding layers as opposed to not bringing enough.

I've heard about the HMK Voyager jackets before but after seeing the build quality on my other HMK gear I'm a little concerned. Frayed edges, zippers breaking, pockets bursting open.... just seems cheap!

And yes, two thumbs up for Freeagent (Michelle). She's a total badass!

Dont by pass anything made by 686, Burton or something similar
I would NEVER buy a klim jacket or pants.... If it was given to me id sell it
Not saying it isnt quailty......just not for me
Any jacket i put on feels like cardboard and the look is so boring

There are many quality snowboard jackets w similar or better technology
In your case find something with as much breathability as waterproofing
Somewhere in the 15-20k mark
U want multiple venting options ad well to dump heat when ur sweatin and fully taped seams

I wear HMK Gambler gear and it is awesome
Has the look of snowboard gear and all the functionality
15k waterproof amd breathability and multiple vent options
I have nevr had issues w the zippers or any tears amd its a few years old now
I have rode in -30 to +4 , sunshine to heavy wet snowfalls and i come home dry as a bone
Part of that is attributed to layering proerly to wick sweat and opening vents to release heat
In fact my HMK boots are 3 years old and look new

Maybe not your cup of tea but IMO there is quality gear out there for half the price of any KLIM gear

Still sporting the old Rheima, can't find anything I like better . . . yet.

Waiting for the Mountain Addiction coat to come out. Saw the prototype at the WSSA show, looked promising.

D really likes the Tomahawk she rode in last year, best venting I've seen yet.

We both wear B-Wear vests, or a roost protector, so appreciate the unlined coats.

Good Luck.

Never had a problem with my HMK Action Jacket. I like the zip out liner, vents, etc. If you are interested, I have brand new (NWT) HMK jackets (both Stealth and Action) in sizes L & XL for sale. $100 off. An Action Jacket for $179.00 and a Stealth Jacket for $209.00. I will charge for mailing, what it costs me. PM me if interested.

Agreed Snow Storm. My Voyager is a nice coat, like I said every bit as nice as the Klim. And after a season on it, and wearing it almost daily in the winter it looks new. Same can be said for my Klim gear.

I spent alot of money on North Face stuff years ago, it lasted one season. In my opinion the snowboard stuff doesn't hold up. One slip on the running board and the knee of a $400 pair of North Face bibs was ruined. Just my experience.

X2 on keeping away from the snowboard gear, they just don't last. Had a 250$ pair of snowboard pants and after a few months of riding they were in poor shape and one fall totally wrecked them, and they never kept me as dry as my klim pants.

I have a klim valdez.... and it stays in the closet. I have had great luck with Columbia coats... a better fit, keeps me dry, and feels alot softer. I admit that they don't look like they would hold up... but they really do (unless you bump the hot pipe while working on a sled.... )

The way I look at it- all of my Columbia has lasted me at least 5 years.... and after that long i'm usually wanting something else anyway. But you really cant go wrong with klim.... i just don't like that everyone and their dog has it.... and the looks. But it does last!

Well the point of buying a new jacket is to use it.... obviously. It seems like a lot of you are leaving the Valdez at home and riding with lighter equipment.

I know the Klim will hold up, but I don't need a $400 accessory in my closet.... I leave that crap up to my wife.

I'd look at the Valdez or the Tomahawk. My next coat will be a Valdez. Right now I'm riding with an HMK Outlaw and really like it. This will be my second season with it and it took a beating last year (I ride through trees a lot).

Klim makes really nice stuff but it seems like EVERYONE wears it. I have been Klim for many years. Bought the Motorfist coat last year. Love it. Nice strong material to hold up to the sharp dead tree limbs. It also vents sweat better than Goretex and Klim. Ask yourself this...how often are you wet from outside moisture vs. inside sweat? Anything I can do to stay drier is going to make for a better day.
