Is this a really bad spline?

I keep reading threads here about breaking QD bolts etc, so finally I went to check on my spline fit and below is the video of what I found. So my question is if this is a really bad spline fit and if just replacing the bolts will help? Also which aftermarket bolts do you recommend, ARP or zollinger?

That type of clearance/slop is normal. Mine and a few others I've checked are all the same, way too much play that puts tension on the bolt head, over time it fatigues and fails. I don't know who's bolts are superior but I am going to change the bolt and washer every 700 miles or so in an effort to avoid the failures I've seen that always seem to happen between 900 and 1,000 miles. It's a miracle I'm still alive after a couple of the rides I've pulled off in an effort to save the sled when the sprocket falls off. I would have had to replace my sled every year for 3 seasons if I decided a ghost ride was the way to go, not rich enough for that and just ballsy enough not to bail. You would think Polaris would have stepped up and tightened the clearances after year one.

We have used ARP bolts with great success over the past 2 season- changing bottom bolt(s) out on our/and clients sleds annually-
Not a failure, with some wicked slop in some sleds.

Remember to chase the threads and clear out any old loctite before assembly to ensure you have a good starting point.

If you search on here these is a lot of information, from discussion in the recent past.

Yes! Calling Teth-air...

It seems to work great. It is designed for worn shafts and splines. Buddy tried removing stock gear with 660 and said it was a bitch. Anyway I rather have hard to come off then falling off by itself.

So if this was a floating gear on a splined shaft like your secondary clutch it would be fine BUT as the bolt is designed to keep pressure on the gear against the bearing it is not acceptable. Your engine and brake will force that gear to move under the head of the bolt and something must wear, either the bolt, the washer or the gear. Any wear will increase clearance and the bolt will loose tension on the gear and bearing behind it. Then the gear will wobble and that stresses the head until it pops off. You need to keep tightening the bolt regularly to maintain the load against the bearing. Stronger bolts still can see the wear but hopefully the head wont pop off so easily. For guys who want to quickly see if there actually is a problem, check the torque on the axle bolt every couple of rides. We have found them loose often.
