Is the new wider TS ski that much better?

I just moved from a Camso DTS129 to a 2016 TS 120 kit. One thing I dont like is how the ski seems to dive into the deeper snow way more than the camso. It also seems to wash out much easier in the deep stuff.

I am considering spending the coin to get the new wider ski from Timbersled and I am wondering if you guys can tell me if you think its worth it.

Thanks!

Short answer is yes.

Look into the spindle and ski combo even if you don’t use the spindle as it is cheaper than piecing together a ski (skags, bushings, rubber, bolt etc)

I have and ride both setups, the new ski is a step better in all terrain and conditions.

Thank you. I rode a friends ARO and I really felt the ski was significantly better, but he has the 137 with all the fancy shocks and TSS, so its kind of a different beast altogether.

I was quoted $600cdn for the front ski, I am not sure what that includes.

That’s probably about right for just the ski. (Maybe ski prices have come down)

In usd prices i was quoted $500 for the ski, spindle, bolt, skags, rubber, loop and bushings. (Was a promotional upgrade to make an older kit compatible with trio)

Ski, loop, rubber, bushings and skags was $575.00.

On my 16 ts the new ski made a huge difference. If you run the aro spindle i would recommend strenghening it. Also the aro ski is very grabby on rocks, dirt, etc. it can be helped by grinding down the center runner. There are threads on both these issues.

don't try that on the trail corners, you will roll off the edge of the ski, and smack your gourd on the ground... don't ask me how I know. :D Ski

No counter steering, just laying it low. In more compact snow I’ve got it so low I can’t have my leg on the low side at all, it goes behind my seat as my bars are hitting the ground. You have to force this thing to crash but it never slips as long as there is even the slightest amount of snow to grab on to. On hard pack roads I agree, don’t try it.

I tried a brand new "old" ts (model year 17) ski today it was sick! Snow is super wind blown and crusty so I was afraid of my 16 yeti ski which is my go to most days. I've been trying the new 18 aro ski with different mods and have just been hating it on the trail/ hardpack. The aro ski is awesome in powder but I hate it on the trail. The old 10 inch ski handled great on the hard pack and wind blown crusty conditions. It was about 4-6 inches of fresh on top of bulletproof hard crusty stuff, your yeti ski nightmare conditions. I love the aro ski in pow but it sucks on hard pack I feel, the old timbersled ski is actually pretty good if your not running pure pow, I was surprised!

Well my new ski just came in so I will be able to test them both out now. I was happy with the 2016 ski on the trail for sure, but in the powder it felt like it dove into the snow and washed a lot easier than my camso. I am hoping for a happy medium.

So far I have not been wowed by the aro ski. It does work well in powder but I'm not a big jumper and my bikes are super light on the front 2 strokes so I don't think I'm benefitting from the extra float like most would. And I would have to say it is not as good in harder snow as the old ts ski. Right now I would rank it number 2 behind the old ts ski. Kind of wish i didn't just spend 500 bucks on it. If i needed a ski it wouldn't be a bad choice but not a must have upgrade. It is way better than the yeti though. The camso is probably fine too if you never had to ride road.

I don’t really notice any difference in float. What I notice is that I can bang a turn much harder going downhill in powder without washing out like the old timber sled ski. Or turn uphill sharper while side hilling in powder.

ARO SKI

Aro ski is a better snow ski than the older TS/Simmons ski. I have tried both side by side and in broken trail, tracked up snow, deep snow, no question in my mind the better spindle location on the ski, more side edge lip to grab and sidehill, all better.

The down size is the gooooofy built up tunnel center skag. My riding partner and I have built a half dozen different single center skags, all seem to work better ON A TRAIL/ SNOW PACKED ROAD/ ICY ROAD, than the ARO stock tunnel skag. I have not built one yet I would really brag up, better but not spectacular.

The stock TS 13-16 ski sucked on the road tooo with the tunnel designskag, and sucked unless you remounted it for proper rake and trail. With a bunch of mods to ski/skag/spindle its ok.............but if you like them I have two for sale already modded.

Any way............still waiting for the perfect ski........might no live that long.

I had single carbide bars made for the aro ski for all three locations, on the ski.

in powder, it doesn't matter what is on the bottom, in my opinion. on the trail is where we need a compromise.

what I noticed is, having a single runner on the aro, and solid ice or roadbed underneath, is extremely frightening. twitches, and wants to track on other tracks, wants to tuck the front, and throw you off... ALL THE TIME YOU ARE ON THAT TYPE OF SURFACE. you cant relax on the bars like a bike (wheel), or you will be going down hard. so, you ride tense, and fight the ski, wearing your upper body out quickly.

soft based trail, like a non icy, groomed trail, it is not as bad but still a bit twitchy.

now, after my initial riding with the single runners, I really think you need a dual runner in the center for trail manners, as it overpowers the ski keel's urge to hunt, and track to funny lines. more riding/testing is needed.

Ski

Far from perfect but the Camso ski is pretty reliable in all conditions. It has the dual skegs with dual carbide runners so on ice it goes straightish. In the deep its really quite good, way better than my old TS ski and easily on par with my Yeti ski. The place I find it the worst is on a groomed trail with some fresh on it that sleds have driven on. The snow loads up between the skegs and the ski washes and plows. If you lean it over it is much better. It doesn't hang up on stuff like logs etc and I think you would be hard pressed to wreck the giant plastic spindle fugly as it is.

I agree

the last paragraph in SKIDOOBOY'S post about running a dual runner again............sadly I have about come to the same conclusion. As many single runner as I have built, I don''t thing I have improved icy road rutted trail manners yet...........one more try on my lastest, but tons of powder for SAT so maybe a week or two, but I am ready to retry the dualy that I modified .
