Is it worth putting a fan on the i/c?

Just wondering if anyone has done any intake charge temp testing to see if its worth putting a fan on my BD innercooler? The lay down i/c's don't get a whole lot of airflow through them and I figured this might help.

I was going to use a one of Boondockers fans that they put in the 2 stroke kits.

I picked up a nytro fan for my setup this year..

Just think about a radiator.. EVERYONE runs on in there cars.. its there for a reason, the greater the airflow across a radiator/intercooler the more affect it has, If your intercooler doesnt get any airflow, it cant work, it will just get hot and heat the air instead of cool it. now if your CONSTANTLY forcing air across it, it will help, expecially at lower speed/high boost levels where there is huge heat in the intercooler. The cooling efficiency of any radiating heat system is directly related to the rate at which the cooling medium can absorb heat, if its constantly being replaced(fast moving air) it will work a LOT better.

Just think of how hot it is when its say 90 and sunny, no wind, now add just a gentle breeze, it makes it a LOT better as the cooling medium(air) is always able to wick away the excess heat.

Kinda a long way of saying, yes it works, its a good idea. I just had my first day of class back at college, so im feeling techincal... for the moment.

Yes a fan helps on the IC temps. Do they work when powder comes over the hood, no. You have two types of fan, ones that suck air and ones that push it. Not enough room on the BD system to mount the suck style. If you ride in over the hood snow you cant run the push style. When you figure out how to make a fan work let me know. If you end up running a fan put it on a switch so you can turn it on and off, or you will trip the relay or blow fuses when the fan blades plug with snow and stops it.

I'm going to remount the battery and do a midmount kit and move the oil bottle back to the stock location. So I will be putting a fan under the i/c. I'm also looking at an atv/motorcycle type oil cooler to help prevent heat soak. I ride hard all day long and have a hard time shutting the sled off for more than 5 minutes.

I have an Alpine Nytro and there aren't any vents on the nose of the hood. Could I mount a fan on top of the intercooler and not worry about snow plugging the fan on top????? Would mounting it underneath the intercooler just put more hot air against the engine or the amount that would be blown onto the engine would not be significant????

Hey Prairie dog, you should put a temp gauge under the hood an see what those temps are like. That way you can get a better feel for the temp.
Considering the IC is under the hood already, adding a fan would help circulate the air that is already there. To some extent. You could also put in a reverse vent above the I/C so the fan would pull in air. and not so much snow would come in. Just a thought.

Have a PL turbo kit with a Nytro radiator fan mounted on the back of the I/C, my 12V power comes from my headlight, low beam fan is off, high beam fan is on, ran this last winter with no problems

what kinda hood setup do you have on the 1 ton?? IMO, a bigger mesh area allowing the underhood temps to stay low is going to be just as important as the fan... you can blow hot air all day, ust not gonna do nearly as much.

if you want a spare hood to hack up I have one. pm me if you want it.

as far as the oil cooler, the stock setup runs the coolant thorught the little oil cooler, but IMO, it wouldnt hurt at all, with the added heat of the turbo in the system, and just overall more heat from running more air/fuel, I would say it wouldnt be a bad idea at all.

I have a hacked up stock hood on it now with a hole cut in it the size of the i/c, but I just ordered a mountain fit. 90% of the time I take the hood off and run without it. I was thinking about putting the oil cooler on the feed line to the turbo...maybe it would help with turbo life too.

I would say yes,we put two yamme fans on the back side of lonemans mcx ic and they move alot of air,can hold a peace of paper 6 inchs above and it gets suck down. For the oil cooler any time your cooling fluids that are going into your motor, turbo the better. Thanks for the good idea!!:face-icon-small-win
