Is it legal to ride a Honda crf50 on the streets?

D
I have a honda crf50 and i rode it to class a couple of times, and all my friends tell me as long as its under 50cc its street legal and I don't need a license it. I'd probably ride it to class a lot more if it was because it gets a little better gas milage than the truck! thanks

Well, I don't know about the States, but it's not legal up here. You need at minimum, a brakelight, headlight, and taillight, as well as DOT tires. I looked into putting a Grizzly on the road, she said no, but couldn't tell me why.

It could definitely be done, though. Guy in town has a CR 500R that he's converted.

If it says 49 cc or less on the motor it's considered a scooter. no permit no lisence, no lights just drive it down the side of the road in mn

I have a moped. 49cc 2 stroke.

I keep it down in Virginia and drive it on all of the roads down there.(The speed limit is 25mph though) It is not registered, or insured.

I was told by Police up here in NY that if I wanted it up here that I would need to register it.

I have seen several mopeds around my town, and all of them have regular motorcycle plates on them. To get plates in NY you need to have insurence to as far as I know(maybe not for mopeds though)

In your case without light, brake light, and signals You can get in trouble.

49cc

I had a 49cc Choppa ( mini chopper ),,
Local motorcycle cop said it could not be ridden in town,,
couldn't even ride it in the parking lot.....

Might just be a city thing here, don't know about the rest of the state,,

Sorry to say, your friends are wrong and don't have a clue as to what they are telling you. There is nothing in Wyoming state statute that applies to 50cc's or less unless it is a moped. In the case of your crf50 it is considered a Motor-driven cycle under Wyoming state statute. A motor-driven cycle is any motorcycle, including motor scooters and motorized bicycles that have an engine with less than 150 cc's. So this means that to ride your crf50 on public streets or highways you are required to have it registered, insured, valid class of license, and proper equipment including headlight, taillight, brake light, horn and turn signals (though hand signals will work in place of electric turn signals). Now the next question is, do you have a title for it? If no title came with it, you cannot register the motor vehicle. In terms of the little mini pocket bikes, they do not have a title therefore cannot be registered and driven on public streets or highways. They can be cited for unsafe vehicle if driven on the steet. A motor-driven cycle if it does not meet the above criteria can be cited for a maximum of 800 dollars and your license will also be suspended if you're found on a public street or highway. Hope this helps....

this guys right.

this guys right.

I agree with this guy agreeing. In SD as long as you don't ride it down the high way you don't need street tires. My old room mate made a cr 125 street legal, he looks like a total tool riding it around but hey its cheap on gas. I have also seen a 50 licensed riding around campus. When I was in college I rode my 50 everywhere. I got arrested one night because I was standing next to a guy that punched another guy, the bartender thought it was me, called the cops and had them haul me away. I tried to tell the cop it was the guy standing next to me but he was being a huge douche bag about it and would not give me the time or day. Funny thing was I wasnt even intoxicated, i had a test the next morning and I went down to have a beer for a friends bday party and happened to be talking to a guy i knew on the way back from the pisser when the one dude clocked the other. Since the cop was such a prick I have used his name a number of times. So after riding my 50 for 6 months unlicensed and finally getting pulled over i told him "officer Olson checked my credentials and said since this vehicle is under 50cc it is street legal to ride the way it is" the cop let me off with a warning after telling me Officer Olson was wrong....hah thats one way to get by riding it without a license.

If you do ride it on the street, make sure you wear a helmet!

A good friend of mine's 24 year old son-in-law was riding one on the street about 4 years ago with a friend of his riding next to him. They were probably horsing around, and no one knows exactly happened (they may have rubbed tires or something), but he lost control at a pretty slow speed and landed on his head on the street. Ended up in a coma for a week, and then died...

Ahhemm.....better check your source on that one. 49cc or less in MN simply means you don't need the motorcycle endorsement. You still need blinkers, horn, DOT tires, head/tail lights. And you need to have it titled, licensed and insured.

Like others have said... It still needs to have a battery and working lights and signals.
Each state will be different, and I'm not sure how it would work when the title states that it is an off road vehicle.
It can be done though... Bajadesigns makes a street legal kit for them.

And its like 500 bucks, YIKES!

on another note my buddy street legaled one, thing is sick! 125 kit, light, new suspension and tall frame. You can jsut tell people hate it when they see it, but nothin they can do!
