Is eVent giving Goretex and Klim something to worry about?

Before anyone starts in about how great Kilm stuff is let me say this. "I also love Klim and have well over $1,000 of their gear."

I have been looking for a new coat this year. Before I give Klim $400 It seemed smart to look at what else is available. So as I look at all the brands eVent keeps showing up. As I research eVent I found a lot info including this link.

http://www.eventfabrics.com/index.php

I know that myself and most people I ride with are often complaining about how they are to hot and need to stop and "air out" or "unzip vents". I have never been wet from snow but often wet from sweat. A more breathable waterproof fabric would help let the sweat out.

Goretex is good stuff. However it was invented 30 years ago and has only improved slightly since then. Im sure Goretex and eVent each has there strong points over the other. eVent seems to be the choice for outdoor activities that are very physically demanding and generate a lot of sweat.

So what to buy...I like Klim's new slogan "Trust". Did they choose this slogan feeling pressure from new products? Has something better come along? Is that eVent and the brands its in? MotorFist, Polaris and 70 other top name outdoor companies use eVent. I wish MotorFist had more color instead of so much black.

So what do you all think? Klim was first to bring high quality gear to market and has brand Recognition. Has the time come that Kilm is going to get some real competition?

Competition is good for the consumer, keeps all the quality manufacturers working for number 1. I like that we have more choices now (Klim, Motorfist, etc.) As long as consumers don't all go for Walmart disposable gear vs quality.

I have read threads swaying in all directions, but it sounded like a lot of bashing towards the eVent. Polaris is making all their riding gear out of this stuff, so hopefully it holds up for their line of clothing.

If your main issue is getting wet from sweat, i would take a closer look at your base and mid layer, not your outer layer. I love my klim but when it comes to base layer, under armour takes the cake. They have so many options to fit your needs.

Under armour is good stuff, however they have nothing in the form of technology apart from anyone else. Simply look at the tag and see what it is made from. You can buy the same materials in any other brand for 1/4 the price. Under armour is an over priced brand that positions its self by showing these big muscles under their clothing. So people feel "tuff" when they wear it.

Looks interesting. I wear good breathable base layer underwear and the moisture definitely does wick away from the body but it gets as far as the liner of my supposedly breathable jacket and stops there. The liner gets and stays soaked until I take the jacket off and dry it out. This is an interesting demo I found when I Googled eVent. I assume they're comparing eVent to Goretex.

Agreed on both points. The importance of a good moisture wicking base and mid layer are key. However sweat needs to keep wicking when it reaches the outer shell also.

Exactly!!! Look in the Cabela's catalogs and see them side by side at a fraction of the price.

the problem with most "testing" you see around is one sided. One company pits its proprietary, paragon of products against another companies sub par products. eVent is still fairly new and is establishing themselves rapidly in a market saturated with "waterproof, breatheable membranes". Both eVent and Gore Tex have excellent breatheability and waterproofability(word?). However, membranes need to be taken care of in order to be completely waterproof and 100% breathable. The pores in the membrane get clogged with oil off your skin along with sled oil dirt and other microdebris. If your GoreTex or eVent garment has lost its waterproof/breathability over time chances are the membrane is just clogged. Check out NixWax Tech Wash. It will revive that membrane and make it feel like a brand new coat.

I just wanted to add in my experience with Gore-tex. I bought a North Face jacket about 7 years ago... 3-ply Gore-tex shell.... I'm not exactly easy on my clothes... I expect to replace a jacket every few years... Anyway after wearing the jacket for the last 7 years, it still looks like new and holds up to the elements pretty well, although I find that on really wet days it leaks a little. I am going with Klim gear this year because of my experience with Gore-tex and the fact that their gear is taylored to sledders. I just wish they had a little better selection for women.... That's on it's way... So I've been told!

Motorfist is also taylored to sledders. :face-icon-small-win

They may all be made of the same material but Under Armour's weave, cut and fit is what sets itself apart from others in terms of quality and functionality.

What's with the arm lenght on Motorfist jackets? Ii went to the Snow show this weekend fully expecting to get a new Motorfist eVent jacket but when I tried it on the sleeves were past my finger tips by at least 3 inches. Didn't find it comfortable at all. Rest of Jacket was fine but it seems the arms were built for orangatans!!!!!!!!!!! Ended up going with tried and true and have yet to let me down, Klim. Good Stuff. Anybody else notice this?

I have to disagree. Under armour fit and finish is way better than any other brand I have. Even nike and adidas is no match. Ua also has so many different options for your needs that walmart and cabelas don't offer. I have more muscles than the ua plastic models so maybe I am partial. Like klim, there is a reason why ua has such a huge market share.

Saw the motorfist lineup this weekend at the show...and I was underwhelmed.

New exterior material seemed kinda brittle. Not sure how they would stand up to bashing in the trees. Time will tell.

First year new product...I wait. Second year...completely redesigned product inlcuding construction materials...I wait again.

Great to have more companies in the market providing competition though.
