Is anyone changing the gear ratio on thier nytro mtx's

What does this do for you? Going to a 19t? Iam curious on what this helps when your running a turbo??

I am running 19/40 stock motor, 153" track. Soon I am going to be going to 18/42 (19 is for sale, plug plug, cough cough).

It is my understanding that for mountain riding, as long as your track speed on a hill climb is less then top speed on flat ground, gearing down along with clutching changes will result in increased performance, via increase in track speed...

Though, I could be understanding it wrong... we shall see......said the zen master...

If you have the horsepower and your engine is pulling the proper rpm why would you want to gear down. That will slow down your track speed. And it is the high track speeds that allow the turbos to go so high. Just wondering myself is all I am saying.

I just installed a Camo 162 x 2.25 track on my MTX. I threw in an 18 tooth gear because I was afraid the larger track would slow it down. Stock, it would only pull 7800 rpm's, add a yoshi pipe (with stock gearing and 153 track) you wil get about 8100 rpm's.(at 10,000 feet elv.)

Today...... 162 track, 18 tooth gear,& yoshi pipe I got 8700 rpm's on some climbs (at 10,00 feet).... much better! I still have to do more testing before I give you my final opinion, but when the sled used to trench and seem to run out of steam on climbs, I thought it was the weight or the power of the sled.
Throw on a 162 & 18 tooth gear, makes a big difference! Bolt on a Yoshi pipe and you get a little more.

for shootin the steep...you prob dont wanna gear down then..

but not everyone is riding the steep!

gearing it down even with a turbo will help keep the clutches cool and not so much wear on the belt(as if the belt is an issue) but gearing it down is a def> plus.....imho

don,t go lower than 19 tooth with a turbo, not enough metal left and you will break the gear, lower gearing with a turbo still allows better performance in the mountains. you will get better track speed on a climb and more effecient clutching, its kind of like pulling a hill with a loaded truck with 355 gears or 410 gears, the 410,s will pull much better. with 19/40 mine would still do over 100mph on the flat. 85mph track speed climbing, and not heat up the clutches. more hp. doesn,t allows mean higher gearing in the mountains. lower gears will get all that hp. to the ground rather than losing it through the clutching, by slipping the belt and heating up clutches.

18 tooth, YIKES, that a disaster.

So has anyone actually seen a broken 18 tooth gear? Or is this an old wives tale? I mean, it is a Yamaha part, you would think that they would have thought about the engineering aspect of the gear when designing it.

Has anyone broken any top gear, period?

Just curious...

Oh, I am N/A....

I have one broken 18 at home. Not in piece, but shaved the top of the tooth. Tension on chain must be PERFECT, even without a Turbo. And the bad thing, both chain and gear are scrap after that.

Running a good tension, but 162 x 16 x 2.5, and 500 km after, everything broken

 Dang ... So what are you running now? Thanks for posting the info.. Did you feel anything, like it slipped once and was done? Or did it slowly get worse and worse?

I have broke a top gear on my 97 mm its not pretty, if you look at an 18 you will see it doesn,t have much metal, you may get away with it with out a turbo. but any slop in the chain and it will be toast. I wish we could put a 42 bottom gear in the nytro.

Alan Ulmer makes them for the reverse chain case. I have one coming, though I think they are still a week out at the least... Only like 20 bucks more then the yamaha bottom one, and it includes the bearing and all...

Guess I will see how it works....
