IS 54/66 gearing to low?

Hey guys i have a 08 M8 SP thinking of gearing it down was thinking of 55/65 but they are out of stock but have the 54/66 but dont know if that is to low any input would be great thanks
 
i haven't done any testing yet with my 141 but I would think that seems really low. Everyone I talk to says that when they gear down they loose track speed. I have 60/60 in my 2010 141 right now. I'm going to try it first.

With a 162 maybe that low of gearing would work good.
 
It is a great gear ratio!! I run 55/65 in my M1000 and love it. 54/64 is splittin' hairs. You'd never know the difference riding.

Go for it!!

I ran 60/60 in my M1000 (stock gearing) and it is too high.
 
What kind of riding do you do? I would agree if you do pin it and climb to the moon straight line big hill climbs you could lose some track speed and you will obviously lose top speed on the trail. Basically anything else it's win-win. Cat obviously thought that they were geared too steep before as they moved '10 M8's to 55/65 from the previous 57/63.
 
Never had a complaint about 55, had two guys that liked 55 so well, they went down to 54.

55 is good all around mtn gearing. For the guys that want to have the best performance on the hill in tight quarters, turning and squirming up over a cornice........54 is more comforting.

Big county, big climbs, lots of inrun, playing with the crowds on the hills, most any gearing will do. Lots of the Yellowstone country, stock or down 2 works. West Mt /N Idaho / BC country you won't go wrong with 54.

Track speed..........ok you can't just gear down and not change your clutching and likely have as good as or better track speed. But.........hey isn't ground speed we're looking for ?
 
Track speed is important but when climbing steep and deep its HP you are running out of there for losing track speed gearing down i would hope it will turn easier freeing up HP as long as the clutching is set up for it.Thats what i am kind of thinking anyway let me know
 
Lots of tree riding short steep climbs and not to concerned about doing 100mph in the mountains

I ride Colorado Rockies and Wyoming (Snowies) most of the time and do nothing but climb and boondock. High elevations and 55/65 works most excellent. You'll dig 54 I know it.
 
You will like the 54/66 gears. You will have to grind a radius notch in the shift shaft for clearence on the big gear. I have done 4 sleds with this gearing and it's the chit. Good Luck
 
Heck the new M8's are 55/65 now so I would say it would not be a problem at all. Probably make it a lot of fun!

Ah the chart -- Went to order 54/66s a few weeks ago and BDX was out, so the M8 ended up with 53/67s. Just wish BDX would have mentioned the need to radius the reverse shifter fork to clear the new bigger 67-tooth gear... :mad: After tearing the DD apart to figure out why it was locked up solid, a little 4.5" angle grinder action with the flappy sandpaper style wheel made for a quick fix.

Was idling the sled on the lift last night to splash some oil on the new gears, did a quick blip of the throttle and the front of the sled snapped up in the air and landed perfectly back on the lift. First an - Oh ****! quickly followed by, instant torque/throttle response/weight transfer is going to rock for boondocking. :D

I have that exact same gearing in my Crossfire. Love it to death. On my crossfire with ten tooth drivers its about the same speed as a M8. My crossfire has 60/60 gears that i think are a bit too tall for the mountains. I get a flat out 70 mph thats it. Getting there is awesome as hell. Depends where exactly you ride. I use two sets of gear cases. 60/60 for hear at home 54/66 for out west. Yes its a bit expensive but i can use my sled for many different types of riding.




I will say and can prove that a crossfire with a 136 track and 54/66 gears will stand a sled on its end. Just remember one thing when the bumper hits dirt. YOu will slow down with such a force you my fall over the bars.
 
Im running 54/66 in my 09 limited. Works excellent for boondocking and tree riding. was still running over 80 down the road racing new xp. Dont think you would be disapointed
