Interesting Statistic about Wyoming

I knew the amount of land owned by the federal government in this state was quite a bit, but I never realized it was so high ..

According to Wikipedia, %48 of the land area in Wyoming is owned by the federal government.

I would have thought it was more like a %25 ...

That's pretty shocking when you consider it's the 10th largest state in the union by area ....

No wonder everything that has to do with land here is such a political football

Thought it would rank bigger then 10th. Thankfully it's ranked 50th in population, that is the best part of that state. Not a lot of people to screw everything up!

its owned by federal government yes, but there land is land locked from probably some of the nastiest land owners known to man kind. I know cause I work for them

Well, that's what I'm saying here though ... The lack of population is why Wyoming is such a target for out-of-state special interests. If we had more than one represenative, IE, more people, I don't think half the garbage that goes on here as far as land management issues would even be issues.

Agree %100 ... but in a way I can't blame them. If I was lucky enough to be born into a family who owned a 40,000 acre ranch in North Western Wyoming, or pretty much anywhere in Wyoming in general, I'd probably be the same way.

There are quite a few land owners in this state I have little respect for, primarily because they were born into the land they now own. It's not like they ever had to work for it ... They have a job in the city, run enough head of cattle to get the tax breaks or whatever, then call themselves cowboys, and throw a ***** fit if anyone tries to fish a creek that runs through their land ...

Forgot about that part of it, your right. Only one voice can't make much of a sound.

There are not alot of us in Wyoming so we have very few voices. The other side of that is most of them speak english though! That is a plus.

Have you been to Gillette or Rock Springs lately? Work force in the building industry is totally Mexican!!! You consider yourself lucky if you can find one english speaking person on any job site. And from what I have been told pretty much all illegal aliens!!! Goverment does'nt seem to care because they need the houses built as fast as they can build so they just look the other way. They don't pay any taxes and deplete are system of everything they can. Very sad.

being a land owner not 40k acres, wouldn't mind but prices better stay GOOD for a while, but a few jacka$$es ruin it for everyone else. You would be amazed how many hours i've spent fixing fence or had people driving out through the planted fields and around hunting season i usually lose a cow or two from trespassers who have a stray bullet or just think they have a huge deer. But guys will cut fences, drive through stupid places, just to get to those creeks.

So when having people on your land like that and sh*t keeps going wrong and adds to your normal work load, you tend to stop the problem. granted it pisses everyone else off that wants to come out and enjoy, but i haven't seen them out there working on the stuff that gets damaged. not that you can do much with the planted fields but the hours you'll spend chasing cattle over the country side.

it's one of those things that you don't know till your actually the one who is the land owner.

What's really sad is most of these "Homestead" land owners have tons of state and federal lands within there property boundries. They own 99 year grazzing leases on these public owned lands and can totally control them. When the lease expires The goverment doesn't offer these leases to anyone but the original familys that homesteaded there. Thus they have total control of these lands. Its so bad around the Sheridan, Buffalo area, that when the children get ahold of the ranches they sell them and actualy advertise the ranches for sale with the state and federal leases in there advertising. Just like they actually own the land!!! Very sad. I have lived here my hole life and I dont think I have met one rancher who isn't an a-hole. These public lands should have access to the public. They should also be posted as public lands. The feds tried to do that once and the so called ranchers tore all the signs down. Very sad!!! There are more confrontations between the public and landowners every year, it's getting to the point where the feds are going to have to do something about it whether they want to or not. We have a "school section" down the road from our house that people deer hunt on, the rancher who held the lease thought he owned the property so much that he started running people off who didn't know any better. It took a bunch of us locals to go down there and confront the A-hole to get it to stop. This is pretty much the norm around the state of Wyo. Very sad!!!

I believe the feds own considerably more a percentage of utah. Having lived in both places, they are living proof of how the federal govt can screw up a good thing. It is wrong for the govt to own so much of the land that is nothing special, just pasture land etc... This is exactly why special interest groups have so much more power over everyday life than in eastern states that have no govt land at all.

In most cases the hispanic worker has all the proper taxes withheld from the employer, then they dont file a tax return. Or I should say that is what a lot of them do. Very few actually work for cash, and if the employer is paying cash he is only hurting himself.

Yeah, there has been more than a few times I've been out scouting around for a new creek to fish or whatnot and come up to a "PRIVATE PROPERTY" sign or the like where it isn't supposed to be. I buy a new Wyoming Gazette every year that has a map of where all the private, state, and federal land is. Take a GPS, verify it, and there you go ... To my knowledge that's the only way to realistically be able to prove you aren't on somone elses' land.

so the new gazettes are actually updated every year? IIRC they used to just use the info from the feds that was updated every 5 years or so.

There is some land out around Hanna that my roomate and I are desperate to find out if it is actually private or not because signs popped up this fall, but all the important info was duct taped over and it jus said "NO TRESPASSING, OWNED BY XXXXXXXXXX"

Now, on the land that "XXXXXXXXXX" actually owns, there is a lot more info below that such as "Public travel approved on established roads unless otherwise posted, etc etc"

If the gazettes are actually updated every year, I'll be buying one ASAP and heading out with the GPS so if game and fish try to nail us for hunting on private we can prove it.

Just like here around Laramie, there used to be signs up on a fence that said "Public Access Area for Sheep Mountain." Now said signs have been torn down. I think its because the landowners that have the easment on their place don't want the public walking through there.

Or how about in western Wyo close to Fort Bridger, there is this sweet section of land that is perfect for elk and deer hunting. But, there is this c*cksucking jackhole that owns a 100 yard strip all the way around said section and won't allow any access. Now, if you can get across his land without being found out, you can hunt that section. But, you can't get the game back across his section without getting in deep sh!t with many different people.

Or the guy that bought the three sections south of Evanston and put up locked gates on county roads. We got the Sheriffs involved with that one and said landowner was told he cannot impede access to county roads.

I -really- hate jackhole landowners.

Just get a helicopter ;)

Some land owners can be a pain for sure. They think that they are entitled to have their own private access to public land. I think that there should be a law that state all public land must have an easement. The gov could just pay land owners for a small strip of land for a road.

I guess I assumed the Gazettes were updated every year since they release a new one every year
