Injurys and close calls.

Lets see injury pics and/or read storys of yours or someone you've seen.

Myself:

3 broken vertibra t-11, t-12, L-1 Trail riding in WI flipped over on to a railroad track. Rode back a couple miles till I could'nt take it anymore. Waited roadside till boys came back with the truck.

split open my chin last year in Cooke, dropped in a hole in flat light. bled for hours lots of duct tape.

dont have any pictures but hit a tree hillclimbing and crack 3 viterbra in my neck, broke some teeth out and bite the tip of my tounge off and got a concussion. the ride out was HELL. and relly F up my sled.

and know you know why its team head trauma

I have learned that a tekvest, knee braces, and a helmet are *VERY* good things.

No major injuries because of that... I can say with a high degree of certainty that I would have broken my knee and cracked a rib or two had I not been wearing the right gear.

Put it this way... My user name is Gimpster for a reason.
I can fill these pages with stories.
11 broken knees
4 broken wrists (one is plated)
3 broken arms (right elbow is pinned)
2 broken sternums
Knocked out my teeth
Honestly, I lost track of all the broken ribs
Punctured lung
Bruised heart
Artificial eye lenses from flipping so wildly brain tried to exit the eylets

Not all from sledding, most from competiton events

Not in the mountains but. I was riding around home when I was 16 on my 2001 edge X 600 going across a field doing about "60mph" and hit a drainage ditch. Ended up with a huge black eye from the windshield, badly sprained left leg (ankle, knee, extremely swallen) and a shattered L3 vertabra. It also happened 1 day before my birthday. 7days and 7 nights in the hospital and 3 months in a upper body cast and missed out on 3 races in my legends car.

curious minds may also want to know what function the 3rd arm serves.

lol!

Here is a x-ray of my elbow disaster. While turning my Indy 500 around in my driveway, at a slow speed with worn wear bars causing the ski's to plow sideways, I thought I could let the sled bump up against the snow pile alond-side the drive way.
WRONG.
The sled suddenly tipped on its left side, and my left elbow was the first thing to hit the parevemt.

Long story shortened, after emergency surgery locally to remove all the non-repairable pieces of my lower elbow joint, a few days later at the Mayo Clinic, I was on the operating table 7 hours! while they installed all sorts of nice Titanium parts, and the next 6 days in the Mayo Hospital. (Hated it!)

The plate and screws could have come out, but they don't bother me. The vertical rod and curved "thingie" replace my shattered upper joint.

I have full motion of my left arm, but only have 10 lb. strength. :(
I have to take care not to do too much with that arm. If that rod breaks loose, a second repair will not turn out as well, I'm told.

The injury that always hurts because of the guaranteed cavity search every time you go through the airport?

^^^ see my edited post above.

Revpilot, you saw my post already, others may not have.

However, the only time I set off the airport metal detector was last year, at the Jackson Hole,WY airport when we were flying back from our week at Togwotee.
I had forgot my cell phone in a pocket, so that set off the detector, then of course they had to "wand" me (fully clothed, LOL !) . Thats when it beeped when he went past my elbow.

I showed the security guy a card I carry from Mayo that describes my condition, plus there's a scar about 12 in. long on the backside of my arm.

No biggie. No strip search. :p

Myself and the GF to Togwotee with Nelson Tours from MN every year. The group flies to Jackson, and Nelson's semi sled hauler takes our sleds and bulky riding gear. Shuttle busses take us to the Tog Lodge.

dude it looks like they used your ski carbide in your elbow

Took out a barb wire fence at about 50mph without a helment on. Top wire went in my mouth and I knocked out 3 teeth and had 132 stitches inside and outside of my mouth. Talk about learning a lesson the hard way. Ride safe!

Nice of them to give you a card. I've seen that Nelson Tours rig up there, (speaking of injuries and close calls) how do they get that jalopy across 8 states without getting it impounded? You should post a picture of that truck, makes your arm x-ray look like a mild contusion!

for me, the most dangerous part of the sled trip is the drive there and back. Last night, I was coming back from the US with 3 sleds and a trailer I had purchased. A mild fog and decent rosds, around midnight, just south of Cranbrook.

Come around a corner and drive right through a herd of elk. 5 or 6 on the road on each side of the truck, another 20 in the ditches. The gap was about my truck plus a couple of feat on each side. There was zero chance of stopping.

I was through them almost before I had my foot on the brake.
