Info on Indy trail deluxe sled

I just bought my wife a 90 Trail deluxe with the 488cc air cooled motor. Obviously this will be a groomed trail only sled so I'm wondering how reliable are these motors? It has pretty low miles and in pretty good condition. Being a 2up sled the only mod I was considering was better suspension? Or should I just leave that alone? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

that is a very durable motor when taken care of every one i have had or been around has ran very good and reliably but i am just anal about tuning and clutching

I had over 8000 miles on mine and never had the motor apart. Just faithfully clean the carbs every fall. The motor will outlast the sled itself.

I have only heard good things about that motor and the sled as well.

I bought a '93 440 sks and installed the 1.5" track on the 133.5" skid and it made a huge difference when you jumped off the packed trail. I also picked up some plastic Polaris skis which help a bunch. Otherwise keep it clean and enjoy it.

If I just stick to the groomed trails then would putting a 1.5 inch track really do much? I assumed it would be less resistance on the motor to leave it stock if I really don't need it? Did the plastic skis help on the trail?

If you are sticking to the groomed trails, then a bigger track won't do much. The plastic skis tend to have a better profile so they cut and turn better than the stamped steel design. They don't stick to the snow when you stop and they are actually flexible enough to absorb some chop on icy type conditions or rough spots. I also like the flexibility of the plastic skis in conditions like loading the sleds into the enclosed trailer. The ski will bump into the wall and bend to help you clear a corner, where the steel will not bend and either hold you or transfer that impact into the rest of the steering.
