infant helmets.

At 1 their neck is very weak. I would be more worried about that. If you are REALLY just putting around the yard, I wouldn't worry about it.

I waited til my son was 2 years old, I am thinking if you are riding a 1 year old around your yard you are going slow enough you will be ok, don't forget the neck brace, there necks will not beable to hold a helmet. so at that point you are better off w/o a helmet if you don't have the neckbrace. my son wears both and always has

I gotta say some of you people are real ingnorant. .....way less speed than these cyclists with the chariot strollers are doing. The funny thing is the people that are bashing me in this thread are probably the same people that watch and buy the mountain mod mania films and watch that little youngster ride a near 400 hp sled which is real safe. I'm a responsible parent just wanting my child to get the feel for the sport in a safe way.

Lets tackle this in reverse order.....

I watch the MMM films, overall pretty good. One year old vs Q-Dog as a teenager is quite different. Notice Q-Dog with gear. Notice Q-Dog has developed neck muscles and the ability and strength to hold on himself. But really what is more responsible me watching a video or you taking a child out for a ride because you want to (oh, I forgot you think I'm irresponsible for watching a film). A child at one year old has poor neck muscles. A child at one year old cannot effectively hang on and support thier weight if you lose your grip.

Chariot strollers, have you seen one, inside it, read the instructions? Chariot strollers have multiple levels of protection designed for the kids that travel in them. From a baby bivy to infant sling to lap belt and dual shoulder harnesses. Plus the kids are enclosed in the chariot and cannot fall out or get run over. And if you read the instructions and follow the recommendations you'll use appropriate gear, not take them behind a bicycle till they are older than age 1, can support their neck and wear an appropriate fitting helmet. And then there's the speed limit set for safety of 15 mph. I honestly don't think I'm all that ignorant (uneducated) about Chariot strollers.

My girls are 1 year old and i take them around my 10 acre yard on my 4-wheeler all the time. Just show them how to hold onto the bars and wrap one arm firmly around them. At only a few mph you will be fine. I would be conscerned of any places with other traffic as you never know when someone else might hit you, that's not worth it to me. But in a controlled enviroment with a little common sense you will have the time of your life raising a responsible new member of the motorsports world. Have fun, sounds like your on the right track.:beer;:beer;

thanks for the info I really appreciate it. I think I might look into the giro helmet, it looks like a quality product. Its nice to see that there are some people like me out there that don't feel a huge need to be over protective and placing there kids in a bubble. I feel even without a helmet the couple of miles an hour around the house is pretty safe but if for a 100 bucks I can make it all the more safe I am all for it.

Biggest thing IMO is just make sure they don't interfere with the driving. The bad one that happened around here the kid was sitting on the atv with an adult visiting with someone after a short ride and the kid hit are laid forward onto the throttle can't remember the exact details but i think they hit a building and flipped over.

I've taken my son for a few small rides in the gator to get the mail and such just a few mph and probably not good but don't use a helmet as soon as he's old enough to fit something he will be wearing thats how I learned to make it a habit was early on.

On a different note the worst one I ever saw was a family trail riding ATVs beside the highway. The one lady had a infant car seat strapped on the front rack with something wrapped in a blanket I can only hope it wasn't a kid but sure looked like it was and they weren't going very slow.
