inconsistent rpm

has anyone developed inconsistent rpm when pulling longer hills? spikes up to where it should but then tends to fall off to as low as 7600, most of the time. some times is pulls good rpm for the length of the hill. if the hill is chewed up some and i have to be in and out of the throttle the rpms usually stays good. on one hill the rpms fell off so far the motor fell on it's face (7400 ish), i blipped the throttle to bring it back and it jumped back up to 8200. this is a fairly recent development, earlier in the year is was pulling like a raped ape all hill, every hill.

lets assuming it isn't a clutching setup issue (b/c it isn't). clutches are clean, all rollers are working properly and the bushings are still in decent shape. i cleaned the power valves. it has a new/good belt on it. checked the plug caps, they are ok but want get better ones (see next post), plugs seem/look fine.

suggestions? tps? injectors? clutch is in worse shape than is seems? umm....?

thanks

this was happening to me. your sled is in limp mode. use the key to turn the sled off and back on. you probably got the sled to hot and it went into limp mode. the kill switch does not clear the computer, but the key does. try it. it worked for me.

I have been told by the dealer that replacing the injectors has been fixing this issue on some sleds.

Got yellow injectors? They seem to be the ones giving the most trouble. If it is in limp mode you would know cause the light on the dash flashes and the cluster says "DET". If it was limp mode you wouldnt even pull 7400 cause it limits rpm, I think to about 6400 if I remember correctly.

snowmann

the pro can go into limp mode without det. there is a certain water temp that sends the sled into limp mode. this is different than the det limp mode.

the key clears both though.

its not in limp mode. i only use the key and i have been trying to trouble shoot for weeks.

right now it is sounding like injectors could be the most likely culprit. i've had two other very reliable places tell me it sounded like injectors. i'm not sure what color i have. i'll call my dealer and see what they say. thanks. any other suggestions/ideas?

Yes I’m having the same problem. I have change the belt, the secondary spring, the primary spring, the exhaust probe and the TPS. The last time I went riding in the soft snow on a hill it would hit 79 drop all the way to7400 and once it hit 7200. On the road ride home it would turn 8100 the pull down to 77. At the beginning of the year it acted like the tac was broken, it would sit on 81 all day long.

thanks for the info. sounds exactly what mine is doing. plus you tried a few of the things i haven't yet. right now i'm leaning towards bad injectors. i know there are some out there. i have a good dealer so i'll call them and see what they say. maybe you should try the same?

check your fuel filter, sounds like it is partially plugged, thats why if you keep backing off and on the throttle it recovers and holds rpms....just pull it out and see if you can blow thru it easy after draining it..most likely its plugged...

good idea. i'll check my fuel filter.

yes, if the sled goes into limp mode then a light will pop and rev up over 6500ish. you have to turn the sled off and then restart it and it resets. but the sled is not going into limp mode, it simply bogs out (for a lack of a better term, but good god don't start think this is the "dreaded cut out") b/c you are wfo and only pulling 7500 or so. too much air, too much fuel, not enough spin would be the very simplistic explanation.

so it seems that i'm an idiot. at least i feel a little stupid... went riding today. sled ran worse than it ever has. wouldn't pull over 7500 and most of the time it was stuck at 7300. bogging out something fierce too. plus going through fuel faster than normal. so even though my belt only has 200ish miles on it and i miked (correct usage?) it last night and it was pretty much perfect, i put on a brand new belt. didn't see a huge difference but seemed to be acting a little better. then shortly before we got back to the truck the idiot light in my head came on and i remembered i had put in the ethonal plug at the very end of the last ride trying something. switch plugs and the thing ran like a rapped ape. flat out ripped. was now seeing 8200+ most of the time with it never dropping below 8100. even still i didn't believe that it was just the belt so i stopped and put the other "perfectly good" belt on and it wouldn't pull over 7700 (little better than before just b/c i wasn't 5% rich now). so even though the belt looks perfect and check out good it is not. it is out of spec? it is just a bad belt? i somehow contaminated it? a little frustrating either way since they are so damn expensive. anyway, i now don't think i have any issue at all. more testing will prove this... sorry for the d-bag move, thanks for the help.
