In your opinion, what's the best and worst automotive engines ever built?

Gas Gussling Pos!!!!

Go drive one,

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

you will be quite amazed, i replaced a tired 95 one ton Chev. Quigley 4x4 van 454 EFI with the 5.7 I-Force, for pulling the 28' Wells Cargo, could use overloads for such a big trailer though.

Pushed it a couple weeks ago against a Duramax, and 20'+ enclosed that passed me in Easton on I-90 west.

We were both pushing 100 towards the top of that four lane section, late night not much traffic.

When they install a Hino engine I am sure it will only get better for the rest of you that think you need Diesel

I had an 06 Sequoia!! And for once you are right!!! That thing did have a ton of power. Unfortunatley it was the most gas sucking vehicle I have ever had the displeasure of owning! Then you throw a trailer on the thing and look out! No wonder the fuel supply is running dry!!

7.3 diesel for me. Gets decent mileage and plenty of power!!

Rob.

08 Sequoia

Has even more power then my Tundra, spoke to a couple in North Bend with a new one. The wife stated she hates it when someone passes when he is driving, while he was wispering that it scares him.

3800 from GM made wards top 10 motors of all time i believe for reliability and possibly efficiency. i would have to check as i have not sold cars for a couple years

vw diesel. they last forever

I will agree, I have a 98 Jetta TDI and it has been a great engine/car.. 180k miles and still getting nearly 50mpg.. (knock on wood).. I loved the 300 I-6 I had in my 94 f150 for dependability, the 350 that was in my 98 chev was a good engine.. The 6.0 that was in my 01 gmc failed at 59k miles and the 4.7 in my tundra is awesome..

Don't know if I liked the 351 Windsor, had on in our 80 Econoline conversion van and had to be replaced after 4 years and the replacement was gutless. The 351 Cleveland was an awesome motor though. Knew a guy that had one in a spotless sharp loong for a Marverick that would smoke the tires for nearly a block.

Oh yeah forgot to add the Olds 400 in the 442 Cutlass. What does the 442 stand for. I heard 2 sayings.
400ci motor, 4 barrel carbs, Dual Exhaust
&
400ci motor, 4 barrel carbs, posi track rear end
??

Hands down the worst motor is the GM 6.5 diesel. Got threatened more than once with being fired if I took another one on trade and had to kick a few trades. Cant say how many times I went to the sales tower and the sales manager was all excited until he found out that the trade was a 6.5 diesel. Apparently something wrong with I think the injection system that it was all but guaranteed to need replacement anywhere between 30-60k, and was pretty expensive to replace. Based on that experience from sales I would say the 6.5 (think it was the turbo) was a hunk of crap.

not 100% sure but i thought i read somewhere that 442 stands for 4 barrel carb, 4 speed trans, dual exhaust.

on another note ive always been a bowtie fan and ive never had any problems with any of my 350's (nock on wood) so theyre at the top of my list also the big blocks are in there to, especially the 8.1 im a big fan of that motor, great power and pretty decent mileage for around a 500c.i. engine. the ford 302 is a pretty sturdy and stout little motor also. ive never been a big fan of the dodge gassers especially the 360 i'd probably take a 318 over the 360.

i got a 87 jetta tdi, over half a million miles. original engine, tranny, clutch and the only thing that i know of that isnt original on the engine is the glow plugs and timing belt. i retired it for the winter but once april or may comes i will take it back out

02 chev with the 6.0, Mind you this was a work truck it's whole life. engine went out at 260K. I think that is good.

inline all the way...

you gotta give credit to toyota for their 22-RE motors, so easy to work on and tufffff, very good 4cyl.

and the 2jz supra motor also,, easy to get massive power, just like CUMMINS, which is the best motor for a truck IMO.

honda did an awesome job on their DOHC b-series aswell, 8200rpm stock...:D c'mon honda haters, you know those are good engines..:face-icon-small-ton

The early castings were weak. Lots -o- cracked heads. Also, the webbing in the blocks used to crack all to heck. They adressed it in '97-98 if I nremember right, but, as in most things, I think the damage to the reputation was already done at that point....

For the crap catagory......

I'll add Gm 5.7 & 6.2 diesel
Ford 6.0 Diesel

For the good catagory.....
I can't believe nobody has mentioned the slant 6!

Whatever was in the Turbo Grand Nationals in the 80's.

Couldn't agree more. The motors internals are so overbuilt it'll last forever with just mild mods.

Cummins - of course, worked on a 1994 1 ton with a job box on it back in 1998. The owner was an elevator technician in Alberta, drove that thing day in and day out. It already had 450,000kms on it and the dude said he never had a single problem with that motor.

7.3 Powerstroke - NOT A FORD GUY!!! But credit where credit is due. Not sure why they ever stopped making that mill.

426 HEMI!!! - SPEED channel did a dyno shootout with all the famous motors of that era, just to see how close to advertised hp #'s they were. 426 Hemi advertised at 425hp. On the dyno put down well over 800hp.

Dodge 8.0l V-10 - Big time HP, unbeliveable torque, atrocious fuel milage. Well you can't win em all.

As for the worst:

FORD 351 - not the small blcok but the big block. Don't matter if it's the Cleavland or the Modified they were both a pile. Had one in my 1980 3/4 ton I was talkin to 2 brothers who mudbogged both only used big block Fords. They said one day that motor is gonna work awesome. It'll have more power than it ever did, it's gonna sound awesome. When you put your foot into it that truck will put you in the seat. When it does stop drivin it. Sure enuf a couple months later it did. Felt like a brand new mill. 2 days later it blew on my way to work. POS!!!

GM 8.1l - Hit the long thin peddle and it sounds like all hell is gonna break loose. . . . . . kinda disappointing when nuttin happens. No more jam than the 6.0 with half the milage. No thanx.

Ford 6.0l Diesel - WTF were they thinkin replacing the 7.3 with that hunk o junk?

GM 3.4l Quad cam - useless power at it's finest. Gotta drive it like you hate it to get 70% outta that mill. Then since it's made out of paper mache and toothpics it flies to pieces. Then you gotta shell out a metric @ssload to get the thing fixed.

Toyota 5.7l iFORCE - iTHINK their dyno is busted. My best friend has one. If that thing has 381hp then I gotta get my truck on that dyno. I figure mine should be hittin close to 600 on that one. Oh yeah and if yer gettin worse milage than me with a motor thats 2.3l smaller and down 2 cyl, you gots problems.

How about the powder special 700 motor?;)

Worst motor? ford 4.6L :face-icon-small-dis What the hell were they thinking

BMW wins third International Engine of the Year Award in a row

There is no question that BMW has some serious engine technology in its arsenal, and now those engines have more awards to show just how good they really are. BMW has won its third consecutive International Engine of the Year award, due this time to the incredible twin-turbo 3.0L inline six that resides in the 335i's engine bay. The 300hp (or more) motor combines blistering performance (car magazines report 0-60 times in the 4.8-5.1 range) with very good fuel economy and virtually no turbo lag. It won three awards in all, with the Bavarians also taking the trophy for Best New Engine and best 2.5L to 3.0L engine...

worst motor is the Ford 4.6? Maybe not suitable as a truck engine, but that mill purrs like a kitten in a car. Got over 200,000 miles on one right now and only replaced the alternator. Don't see it giving out anytime soon either. As far as all time great engines, the Ford 428 CJ has to be one of the most prized of all time, for me anyways.
