Impulse Standalone Upgrade

After talking with Paul a few times this summer it sounds like he is working on a standalone system for the apex. He should be testing this weekend and hopefully have them ready to sell in December.
To all of you Nytro guys that made the switch from the fuel control box to the standalone, how much did the upgrade run and did you notice a gain in performance, fuel mileage, throttle response etc?
To me the standalone is so appealing because I would never have to touch the box again and get get away from race gas as well (currently running 50/50 at 6,000 ft and up elevation).

Thanks

Living close to Paul and riding with him and a lot of Impulse sleds here are my thoughts. Unless you are going to run the bigger injectors it may not be worth it. The stand alone was really important on the Nytro because it was much harder to tune and really needed big injectors. As you probably know the Apex with the PL or Att controller is very forgiving and so unless you plan to do some of the things he has in the future you may be fine where you are. I plan to run the stand alone but will run the PL box day 1 until he tunes a few

Thanks for the input. When I spoke with him earlier he did say that the kit would include larger injectors. Which is certainly going to increase price. Was just hoping to clean up the lower end a little bit and not have to adjust the box from my house at 500ft elevation to our riding area every time. What other things does Paul have planned that you referenced?

Paul would be the one to ask about the upgrade cost. As for performance increase it is undoubtable. I cannot say I noticed a big difference in fuel savings or extra cost. I can tell you that all you have to do is turn the key and ride. I hope to be testing the new upgrade to the Fuel control box in December. The new program will allow the Standalone Fuel control box to adjust fuel on the fly based on A/F numbers from your O2 sensor. This is something that no other system can do. How many times have you heard guys say that snow conditions vary on every ride, on every pull. If you have a system that you have to dial in you must wait until you are stopped and the run is over. With this system the Fuel ECU will do it while your in the middle of your pull. The system will have a built in target A/F number, say 12.6 for example. You pull a hill and your hitting 13.5, the Fuel ECU monitors you A/F and crank rpm and adjusts your fuel to reach that golden number of 12.6. Testing a new sled you want to be sure there is enough fuel at fuel out boost, well now you will not have to worry about that. Guys pushing 23-24 lbs will have piece of mind.

As for the Standalone for the Apex Paul is testing a full ECU standalone and fuel management system. It is going revolutionize mountain sledding. Timing adjustment, computerized fuel control and on the fly adjustment etc.

This will be available for the nytro at some point this winter.

You are also correct about the fuel savings. No more running 110 gas at $5-6a gallon. With the standalone you can run pump gas(92) up to 15lbs without a worry (at 6000 feet or higher). For 17lb I would splash in a couple of gallons of 110 octane but you can run pump gas (92) up to 17lbs.

Thanks Montleyone, that sounds awesome. I better start saving a few penny's so I can get on the order list. Also out of curiosity, I know that you do the nytro seats all of the time (Im sure there is a larger nytro market than apex market) but do you have the ability to do the apex impulse seat as well? We had to take a brand new Boss seat and gut it. Fit and finish leaves a little to be desired. Thanks

What does the fuel management system have to do with fuel grade at a certain boost? If you want to run pump fuel at 17 then you need the .08 head shim instead of the .06. Correct me if I'm wrong...

Fuel management is one of the components that corresponds to the boost level you can run with stand alone when we're talking higher boost levels. 3 main factors to how much boost you can run given you have a effecient set up and enough fuel. Octane, static compression ratio, and timing advance. There are other factors, but these are the main ones. With the Apex set up we'll be able to pull timing advance on top end and increase boost. To much timing advance on top end will lead to detonation just as quick as to much compression, or not enough octane. Like Andrew said, the Apex is good to 20 psi on stock injectors if you have a proper fuel pump. Unless your running over 20 psi I don't know if stand alone would be worth it. But if your looking for timing control, big boost, increasing rev limiter, antilag, self adjustment afr at nearly any boost level, cleaner bottom end, and other features it will be pretty sweet. Hopefully we'll get out this weekend and do some testing.

I would try to do an Apex seat if there were enough people that wanted it. Maybe I will put up a post asking about interest in it.

Motleyone, a post would be great. Or let me know and I can round up the impulse apex owners. How many do you need to make it worth time?
Thanks for the input guys. Can one of you post how the testing goes? Thanks

Talked to Paul yesterday and he said he put the standalone on whalyons sled, "its ripping hard" he said running clean all the way through and pulling like a freight train. So its looking good boys.

Ditto on what EZ said. Paul was very happy with the results and said it proved to be easier thans expected to build the program. I can't wait to get one on mine!:face-icon-small-hap
