Ignition timing question

Ok just got the 600 from a '04 Switchback back together(new crank and stator). Ran it for a few miles and the exhaust gets cherry red but the motor does not overheat. I'm thinking ingnition timing is way off. I'm ordering the tools to adjust it tomorrow and wondered what method of adjustment everyone prefers?

Is there a way to set it "close" untill the tools arrive?
