If your boost is...

I have a turbo smart boost controller.....I never hammer the throttle off the line too scared to see what it would spike too....always thought that it was the nature of the turbo's waste gate.....but it makes sense that the boost controller doesent help....I never could figure out that some tmes it seems to hold boost fine then sometimes its hold for a bit at 15psi and drops too 12 psi......must be that controller.....

If I never run the boost controller how much variance would there be if you set it at 15psi @ 5000' if you riding 7000 would it drop lots?

Probably 1 psi or so.

If you can, try the hallman controller, or an electronic controller. They do not do this nearly as much.

As iamvector just noted, there is way's to help with the spiking. What he mentioned are very good points in achieving that.

my guess the reason the apex & now the nytro spike bad is because the both build rpm extremely quick & the waste gate cant dump the excess fast enough.bumping the rev limiter will make this worse,you could add a little clutch weight if its real bad but then you lose some of the throttle response.

Haven't seen one that doesn't spike yet. We're talking a fraction of a second here, usually accompanied by hitting the rev limiter if I'm not mistaken. These things spool up pretty quick and the wastegate can only repond so fast. I set mine to what it holds after the initial spike and haven't had any problems(knock on wood) Can't say I've noticed much difference between having a boost controller (turbosmart tee) and not.

So does the spiking only happen when you punch it off the line instead of coming on smooth? I've only been on one turbo and that was the camo Apex Darko built and I was too busy trying to watch where the hell I was going to look down at the boost gauge!!!!!!!:p

If you come into it gradual will it still spike???????

MCX for my Nytro next year!!!!!!:beer;

no it should not spike as bad ,it when you hammer the throttle that it is the worst.its all about how fast the turbo gets rid of the exhaust gases out of the waste gate,if the waste gate doesnt dump the excess boost fast enough you get a spike.
