if a guy were to have a custom sled built....

If I had the coin I'd buy one from Winter...

Then I'd copy it a few times so I'd have a stable full of them for friends I want to take sledding but don't have a sled of their own (or broken down)...:D

unfortunately, the local dealer is the last place i'd ever go. we suffer from an area where you need to strip the sled down and re-assemble it to correct the "dealer prep".

mods are the last thing they know about. a guy would be better just ripping into it himself and learning as you go instead of going to a dealer around here for mods.

+1 for myself.

Not sure why so many people thing mods are tempramental. Perhaps they have only seen machines built by hack shops, and there are a lot of those.

Ihave built several and reliability has never been an issue.

I thought I would take a look at this post as it looked interesting, I noticed I was mentional as well, first I want to thank all who bought up winter as someone they would trust to build a sled, thank you.
All the people mentioned are very good builders and started with building a sled for themselves so that would be my first choice, build it yourself.
If you have the time, patiants and friends to help when you get to the sticky parts, this way is the most gratifing.
Start in the spring with a new sled or at least one you know well.
If you want someone else to build it because you don't have the time or interest, make sure the sled you want is a sled the builder is completely familiar with or you will have a sled you are not happy with, make sure you can get your sled before the snow flys, if the builder is setting it up then it should be ready to test when the snow is on the ground. On a personal building note I limit myself to 5 sleds per year, they are built from the ground up, I generally like to start with new sleds in order to keep the costly surprises to a minimum.
At this point in the year I am finished with all sleds projects and am ready to ride, this means my customers are also ready to ride theirs, if there are issues I am ready to deal with them pronto, this is what I would look for as well as make sure the builder is within driving distance or that you are skilled enough to take care of any problems that would arise, other points to look at, make sure your builder listens to you and your needs, returns your calls and is more of a perfectionest then you are or you won't be happy.
