IDAHO: Island Park / West Yellowstone 2012 /2013 Snow Reports

We have been finding good snow near the Jefferson area. Although it is starting to get crusty. And if you are a good rider you can drop off Reas into it still. The cornice isn't monstrous yet.

Why no updated snow reports?

Somebody has to have been there in the last few days or is out there now.

Snow Report.

Rode out of Big Springs in Island Park.

BITTER COLD today.
Launched at 0 degrees.

1 foot of fresh ULTRA DRY powder.

Very few people out on the snow today because of the cold.
But the snow was UNTRACKED and in very good shape.

This was one of those days when the snow dust from the guy in front of you would just HANG in the air like fog...

Very good day..

Spent the day Riding Island Park.

LOUSY weather.
Rained all day long at lower and middle elevations.
Low Clouds at Mid and High elevations reduced visibility WAY DOWN.
Sometimes to 50ft or less.
Mostly 100-200ft

Snow on top was VERY GOOD with lots of fresh untracked powder (much to my surprise!)

Expected to see a TON of sleds and only found 2 trailers in the Big Springs parking lot when we pulled in at noon.

Temp seemed to hover at 35-36 most of the day.

FLAT LIGHT beyond imagination at all elevations.
Riding in the trees was the best to get some depth perception and ground definition. Riding out in the open on top was nearly impossible.

I'm not sure who told you trails were bare dirt unless someone trenched there way down. The rain was very light and mixed w snow. It didn't affect snowpack much. Up high there is a light crust on the old snow, but nothing too bad.

carl c....set to leave on a 14 hour drive this Thursday......do you feel it is worth the drive....with a group of 11 that like to play in meadows and in the trees....been going to IP for this 11th year and only get that way twice so want to make it worthit.....how will compare to last year over super bowl time frame....did this new storm bring much.....thanks for the honest and accurate input.

The snow will be really good. Guaranteed. How much will there be? I don't know. I have been down for the last four weekends and have found 1 1/2- 2 ft every weekend. It has been old snow but still very soft and no tracks. I think this weekend will be one of the best of the year. It's not supposed to stop snowing till Thursday then clear up for the weekend. And you will never know how it is if you don't try!

I was up there on Sat. It was definitely raining a little in the lower elevations, but up higher there was great snow. No dirt on any of the trails we were on. We found 8-12" of new powder on Sat. and it has been snowing every day since according to the weather report. Supposed to snow for the rest of the week as well. I'd bet you'll have great snow.

thanks guys as stated always fun to ride even average snow vs what we have been getting in the dakotas.....the "dirt" comment just scared me a bit.....be there riding some powder and having a few cold ones in 4 more days!!!!

Just picked up another 8 to 16" last night just depending on where ya are at~ and more on the way!!!
