Iceage + Mt Tamer install ?'s

Having a couple questions on installing a Mt Tamer on Iceage rails that were made to fit the Mt Tamer. Front of rails seemed OK

Here's my 1st question. The rear arm mounting hole is 3/8" higher than it would be using the brackets included with the kit.
RearArmhole.jpg

May be no big deal, but need to make sure.

2nd question or frustration is the rear shock mtg holes pre-drilled by Iceage are off center and will not allow bolts to be screwed into the shock shaft.

I could ream the hole so that it fits, but think that would not be smart (sloppy)

I plan on contacting Timbersled, but know they are busy with the shows & just wanted to know if anybody else had these issues.
Thanks

I have that exact same setup...aren't the brackets only for use with the stock rails?

Use the predrilled hole locations and dont use the bracket.

Also, pretty sure my rear arm lower mounts are bolted to the front holes, not the rear.

I figured that too that the brackets are only for the stock rails, so that may not be a big deal. Was just going off the height of the rear arm in instructions and thought whichever rails you use, that the mtg should be the same height. The instructions say 29-3/4" between front arm hole & rear arm hole & it is the rear hole in the rear arm mount that is 29-3/4" Am I wrong? The front rear arm hole is 27-3/4". The back rear arm hole is 29-3/4" on my rails.

Unfortunately, my sled is not in my shop right now, or I'd take a look...I'll see it tomorrow, but by then you should be able to talk to Alan or Budd and get an answer...either way, post the results.

Will do. I'm still not happy about the off center shock mount holes. Maybe I'll try reaming out just enough to get the bolts in. Question for you Modsledr, How did you secure your hyfax?

Hyfax are secured with a stock style screw...I bought the sled with the susp already installed, so not sure if you have to drill and tap yourself.

When you say "off center" for the shock shaft, do you mean compared to the bracket? Or that the 2 sides are drilled in different locations?

Or is it not centered "top to bottom"...pretty sure my shock mount shafts have a flat spot on them to keep them from spinning...maybe this is intentional?

Here's what I did

I also had the predrilled rear shock mouting hole off center (top to bottom). Both rails were equally off. I shaved a little off the spacer that goes on the inside of the rail to allow the shaft to go up enough to get the bolt in the hole. I felt that this was better than enlarging the hole. Here are the pics:

Yep, thats how mine is...pretty sure it is intentional...the flat spot keeps the shaft from spinning...not sure why the front mount isn't that way, though??

My fronts were also off a little bit and I had to shave them too. I don't think this was intentional, because it's not the shaft that I had to shave, it's the spacers that fit over the shaft that keep the shock centered between the rails. Maybe Iceage had something not set up quite right when they built them. I was a little dissapointed considering the price of the rails. The Timberlsed Mtn Tamer, however, looks perfect!

OK, I did shave a little off the spacers & it fit. Yes, I think it is better than enlarging the rail hole too. All is installed & all I have to do now is try to figure out how to get the rear idler wheel adjusting brackets off the old rails. Those are riveted hard. Wont budge even after grinding the rivets off.

well, it seems odd, am curious if the height is from the height of the actual rail height and the whole is in the same spot it should be???

have a set of the iceages enroute too...

OK Measured from bottom of hyfax to top rail lip:
Stock = 1-7/8"
Iceage = 1-3/4"
Picked up 1/8", so holes are only physically 1/4" difference in height from floor.
Will find out if this makes any difference when I talk to Timbersled.

What are you doing for a rear axle?

I have the exact same style (old) IceAge rails, w/o all the light weighting done.

I purchased a 2 wheel axle and it doesn't fit these older style rails (weather their older style or not, i'm not sure, they are just clearly different than the "light wt" ones my buddy has).

I emailed Mike (IceAge) on this to see what I need to do, but was just curious if you got that far yet, or were also planning to use a 2 wheel axle??

Oh, and it appears the IA axle requires a different adjuster...which I wasn't aware of either??

I'm using Wildchilds axle for 2-8" inside wheels Fits perfect. Old style rails??? I just got these from Iceage. Did they come out with a new style last week? I thought they didn't look like some of the other rails I'd seen on the Nytro but assumed they were the Timbersled rails.

ahh, does WCs axle use the stock yamaha adjuster?

i got to looking, theres no way i can even mount the cat/pol/doo adjuster on the rails I have.. no where near enough room in front of the slot..

ugh...
guess I could spacer out the stock axle for 2 wheels..

anyway, sorry to change the direction of the topic. :)

gl!

Hi Guys,

Here are some pics of my 162 Ice Age rails built for the Mountain Tamer. Hope they help, 400 miles on it and no problems. I did not have to cut or shave anything. My inside wheel kit uses an Artic Cat setup and fits perfect, I believe they come that way for evey rail order. The Cat track tension set up is much easier to deal with on the trail if needs be. You do not use the bracket that came with it that is for the stock Nytro rails only. Ice Age built everything to fit the kit. Any questions fire away.

Yes WIldchilds axle fits the standard Yamaha adjusters.
Motleyone, Just how did you get those rails, from Iceage or Timbersled? I ordered mine from Iceage & told them I wanted it cut & setup for the Timbersled suspension & 8" wheels. I guess I wasn't clear or they changes their rails

OK, mike explained. The rails you and I have are for a Yamaha axle, or stock axle...or using the Yamaha adjusters.

The "other style" is to use a Arctic Cat (aka Ice Age) 2 wheel axle...etc Which utilizes the AC adjusters.

Sounds like I'll need to get a WC axle..which works with the Yamaha adjusters...and I'll be set.

Its just odd that the rails are so differently cut.

Intersting, those rails look similar to mine, but the rear axle part is no way similar.
Man, there are a lot of different style IA rails goin around...

Here are sledskiings rails...which are also IA for a Timber rear...

Ahhh I see now. I wish I would have got the other rails now. Wildchilds axle is great & uses parts off the stock rail & AC 8" wheels. The adjuster brackets seem to be welded to the stock rails I ground off the rivet heads but they wont budge. May have to flip for new adjusters from Yamaha & bolt them on the new rails.
