Ice Scrapers VS Bogie Wheels...

I just put bogey wheels on mine tonight. Went for my first ride on my new sled last Sat. and lost some hyfax. I feel that on a 163 Scratcher aren't effective enough.

I have scratchers on my 06 900 with 1200 miles and no bogies at all.My hyfax are still in good shape! Scratchers WORK Period! Bogies will not cool the engine down ! I just bought some slidekicks for my sled so maybe I wont break any with the reverse this year !

Slidekick are reverse compatable scratchers . They dont break if you forget to put them up when you use the reverse. I break a scratcher every year this way !Do a serch for user Whitefish he sells them and you will find threads with all the info you will need .

I've yet to run into anybody that likes them. Heard they just don't have enough down pressure to throw the snow. But it's only what I've heard.

And if they work PERIOD. Why do I have Hyfax melted to my clips?

happyfast has a pair, I think they fixed the not enough pressure problem last year/this year?

I re-installed all the bogey wheels on my 151 after doing the Holz last week ... I have a pair of scratchers too, but IMO the scratchers are a complete PITA ... unless you're gonna do a real long trail ride or something it's so annoying constantly having to put them down, pick them up, etc ...

I figured that those bogey wheels altogether might have been 5-6 pounds .... not enough to make me wanna replace a hyfax every 6 months.

Well said. And don't forget when you throw that thing in reverse for some Scratcher removal for 50 bucks:(. For 4-1/2 lbs. I'll drop the weight myself and not have to worry about them.:D

Good to see your Avatar again Dogmeat.

for those running regular ice scratchers, if you remount them to the top of the rail so that there is no hole for the spring end to sit in(the spring end sits on the top of the rail) you wont break your scratchers if you backup,..they just swing under ...

It's easier to buy it then diet. You know this topic seems to be still out for debate. Bogey wheels have a purpose, hence the reason the Poo dealers all offer a set for 08 and 09 sleds, mainly 09 sleds. From the factory Polaris is looking to make a "light" sled so sending it out to all of us with now bogey wheels makes them happy because its 5 pounds lighter when it hits the ground. There is no doubt that scratchers work, to a point, but if you run a sled without bogey wheels and just scratchers, and you are running down the trail or running in anything less than 6 or 8 inches of freshy then you are going to wear hyfax's out. If you dont mind changing out hyfax's every 6 months, good on you, but you will wear them out its in disputable unless you always ride in powder. I had someone argue that because the sleds come with no wheels and all the "pro riders" dont have wheels on their sleds so they must know something. Well no s%$* they dont generally have to worry about hyfax's because they are either paid for or they ride in powder all the time. Bottom line IMO, buy the wheels, if you can tell the difference between 5lbs off your rails, I would like to talk to you, cause most can't, and if your that worried about 5 lbs off your sled in wheel wait, dont eat the extra cheeseburger the night before riding.

i left the front outer bogie wheels on my sled and took the rest off. i run scratchers and thats it. the rear wheels inner two and outer two are a joke. (in my opinion) as far as wear on brand new hifaxes wether you have all the wheels and then some or not they will wear a little on the first ride. i put 1600ish miles on my 900 w/ no bogies and scratchers before i had to replace the hifax's

I have a new 09 D8 163 and all the people that had the 08s that I have talked to have had problems. I mounted the two inner wheels right where the scratchers touch the ground. I'm hoping that the wheels will lift the slides off the track enough to let the snow in at that point I have the same setup on my 03 Vertical Escape 159 and as long as I have the scratchers down I have no problems but it has a closed window track. I also mount the scratchers so they will rotate if I use reverse or slip backwards. On hard snow it will bend the scratchers but it won't distroy them. On soft snow they just rotate around and back again when you go forward. I just leave them down 90 percent of the time because I'm too lazy to put them back up.

There was a post earlier in the year where a rider kept all of his bogie wheels and mounted traditional ice scrathers that flipped out of harms way when going in reverse.

Rather than the rails taking the rubbing abuse of the spring wire he made a piece of aluminum which mounted to the rail bolting through an existing hole and the scrather mounted to this small aluminum plate putting the scratcher out of the bogie wheel's reach and bore the brunt of rubbing in either direction.

I ran the slidekicks last year with no outside wheels, about 850 miles with some trail and my hyfax show almost no wear.It was d8 155.I love those slidekicks

When you do remove your wheels you also have to make sure your limiter straps and suspension is set up properly. If they are not set correctly you will definitely get more wear in sections of your hyfax.

I actually have always removed my wheels but I also manufacture ice scratchers and have a biased opinioin! LOL!

BTW...if you do decide to buy my ice scratchers....I offer a three month warranty on breakage even if you do back up on them.

That was me, I just made some for my 09 D8, sledhead wanted some so I will take some pictures and post tonight. I still need to make sure that they won't hit the front suspension arm.

You know I wonder about alot of things I read I hear. All these sob stories on this site but my own experiences have taught me otherwise. I think some people just have bad luck and other could just wreck an anvil with a rubber mallet ! One example that comes to mind is the 900 rmk intakes i have tried them all and made some of my own I cant tell the difference but others swear the fire n ice airbox I s the only one that works .

as far as the scratchers go I agree with Dogmeat they are a pita! that's why I like the slidekicks put them on and forget about it!

As far as the downpressure issue If the work well enough as is I have an idea to fix it and make use of that extra hole drilled for the regular scratchers !
