I think I am done

Well, my 9 locked up today.
Cruising along at 70 and there was some horrible sounds from the pto side, so I snapped the tether quick and stopped. I found the belt to be missing a large section of inside ribs....was hopeful that that was the problem.
After swapping to a new belt, I fired her up, and immediately knew there was more to it. It started, but with alot of noise from the bottom end and alot of resistance, then it locked up.
What came first? the belt failure, or the engine failure? It really sounds like crank or cross shaft to me, very low in the engine and with loud knocking, and some crunchy sounds lol.:face-icon-small-fro

This is pretty devastating to lose the rest of the season, but there's no way I am fixing it right now. Probably in the fall, or on rainy days in the summer I will tear down the engine and see if it's reasonable to fix. I'm getting a new sled next year so it's only going to be a backup sled, sold, or parted out. (depending what I find inside the cases) I'm really bummed, I can't handle not being able to ride, whether it's my sled or bike.:crutch:

Dan, that BLOWS!!! So sorry bud... seems like that 9 has given you several reasons to move on the last couple years - as much as I hate to say it:(:( Good luck with your 2013! Let us know what happens to the old 9.

BTW, How many miles are on it now?

I'd have to power up the mfd to get the exact number, but I broke 4300 miles recently. Yeah I'll either fix it and keep it as a backup, or part it out probably, but who knows, I'll update. I think it just didn't like to run past Feb... all my major breakdowns happen after Feb 1st.... If I am not mistaken, this is the latest it has remained running in a season aside from when I bought it in 06/07 (problem free, warranty covered year!)

Hell, 4300 isn't a bad number for any mountain sled to make it to, let alone a P.O.S. 900... just look at all the sleds folks part out at 1500-2K miles:eek:

Until you see my list of repairs over the 4300miles! This sled has been fun as hell, but has been VERY expensive to keep running.

2006 -Bought new, no problems
2007-Dropped mag piston skirt just outside of warranty, engine was a total loss. Sled sat for the rest of the year.
2008-Replaced engine with a low mileage ebay engine that I rebuilt
2009-Spent $3000+ converting it from a Switch to an RMK. Half way through the season I dropped another mag skirt, lost one cylinder.
2010PTO piston, cylinder, and lower rod bearing
2011squeaked a piston, and now the crank failure

That's just the engine related problems.

I can relate, my 06 700 has given me so many problems over the three years that I have owned it. I got so tired of dealing with the dealer and fixing my sled that I bought a brand new 2011 M8. With a 2 year warranty. I R very happy as the new sled does everything better, easier, and uses less fuel to boot, and the refinement of the sled is light years ahead of the Poo. Never coming back to Poo untill they get their **** figured out.

i also had horrible engine problems when i was riding polaris. i probably could have bought 2 new sleds for what i put into my 800 rmk repairing the engine. i am now on yamaha and hopefully engine problems are behind me.

Don't get me wrong..... even if my 900 was running flawlessly and had been reliable, I would be getting a new sled next season anyways.
In fact, I think I have resolved to only run new sleds for 3-4 years before upgrading in the future.
