I really hope that im not the dumb one here!!!

Ok so my sled was for sale on snowest. i was talking to this guy justin figgins about buying it. we settled on 3,000$ and i met him in lewiston( i live in boise so its about a 6 hour drive) He called me last night and said that his dad would be the one coming to get it and he would have a chasiers check.

so the dad shows up and i start the sled(starts first pull), we wait for a minute and shut it off and he goes, "pull the dipstick, Justin said not to buy it if it had any shavings on the dipstick. so i pull it out and like any sled that has ever been ridden it has what looks like metal shavings on the end of the dipstick. the guy tells us that he is not going to buy it cus of the "shavings". we tried to tell him that every sled has so called "shavings".

So he ends up not buying the sled cus of the "shavings" witch arent shavings they are sludge particles that are magneticaly charged which look like shavings. when you wipe the end of the dipstick off they just turn into oil.

Am i the dumb one here or is "Mr. Shavings" ??

granted my dad took a day off work and paid for gas there and back for nothing...!!!:mad::mad:

It's been my experience that unless the oil was changed in the last 150 miles, there will always be those "shavings" on the dipstick.

i take it he was checking the chain case dipstick which always have metal shaving on them. metal on metal will always create shavings. that's why there's a magnet on the end to pick them up

never seen a sled that didnt have "shavings" expecting differently requires oil being recently changed, or suspending of the laws of physics (things rubbing against each other cause particulate materials...)

Every sled I have been on will have the shavings on the end of the dipstick. He's either inexperienced or wanted to back out. I would be more concerned if I didnt see anything on there.

i think he's the dipstick. And at gas prices I would beat someones a$$ if i drove 6 hours

Justin, since you are on Snowest, come on to this thread and explain yourself. That was a real areshole maneuver you pulled. If you say " we have a deal" and a guy drives 6 hours to meet you, you better be handing over a check.

You are buying a used sled. Even if the chaicase needs some parts, big frickin deal. If you want a new condition sled, buy new. A few shavings means nothing.

IMO, you should be driving to this guys house this weekend with cash and an apology.

edit - I would never drive 6 hours to meet someone unless he paid a deposit. Even if it was $100, it pretty much commits the guy to show up.

Mr. would-be-buyer should have asked the questions that he had concerns about...BEFORE he agreed to meet. It's sounding like inexperience and ignorance, and a chitty deal. What a waste of time.

I would be pretty upset over the deal.

It sounds like you may be better off not selling it to this guy anyways.
He obviously doesn't know much about snowmobiles.

Always shavings on that dipstick magnet....you might get 1 ride after changing the oil where it stays clean....maybe.

All BS aside, I don't think there's anything wrong with asking him to reimburse your gas money. You drove WELL out of your way just to lose the deal over something redudant. It's not like you were loading up a sled in August for a nice drive around....you drove out there to SELL IT to him, he owes you bigtime IMO.

That's pretty lame, and yet again another thing screwing over honest buyers when they ask sellers to drive to meet. The only way I would drive to meet someone is if they also had a long drive, meaning they were very commited to buying it. I would for sure be wanting gas money at a minimum.
