I need a new sled shovel, is there one that is better than the others?

I am looking for a shovel for my new sled. I have a SOS "Survival on Snow" shovel/saw now from the mid 90's.

I'm sure there are better/lighter shovels out there now that I should consider.

I'm looking for a great buy on an aluminum shovel, with a fairly good sized shovel portion that's well made and reasonably light. If it has probes or a saw in the handle, so much the better.

Thanks

I do not know what a good price is because I found mine in the mountains several years ago.

I do not want a plastic shovel when there is an emergency.

I have a new BCA shovel if that interests you. It has the probe in the handle. My dad carried it on one trip out west. He had it wrapped in a towel inside a backpack with nothing else.

If this interests you at all, make me an offer and we can go from there.

What about mounting the shovel? I have a survival on snow shovel with the saw in the end, but can't find anywhere to mount it on my '09 Summit XP. Any ideas where to mount it, or a different shovel that I can mount to the sled?

It doesn't have the saw or probe but I would recommend a black diamond shovel with the handle that collapses into the blade. It has a nice wide shovel, made of aluminum, and is excellent for a quick grab out of your backpack. No hassle having your shovel hit your helmet when fully extended or having to put a shovel together.

Most saws that are built into the handle are junk. Buy a good pruning saw that comes with a sheath or us a chainsaw scabbard. Also no plastic shovels. My .02

Metal of some sort is the only way to go. a friend of mine got hurt real bad out on his sled compound broken femur it was quite some time before he was rescued some of the guys got a fire started to try and keep him warm. shovels were heated up by the fire and put under the coats to keep him warm while waiting for rescue. smart idea. Just another use for your shovel.

Avy equipment stays on you, not on the sled.(JMO)
I would also choose a metal blade, suggestion

I have the transfer 7 I use it alot(work at a ski hill)for work, another thing I like is when it is in your pack it gives you some more back protection incase of an impact.

great suggestiosn on heating the shovel, had not thought of that, but is a fantastic idea!!!

also ditto Metal ONLY...if you ahve had to dig in an avy, you KNOW it is like Ice, and the Lexan or other weaker types cannot handle the force and stress of emergency digging...last thing we want is equipment failure when trying to recover someone!!!

Also ditto the mandatory to keep avy gear ON you...always on yoru body!!! however, I also carry another shovel and duplicate survival gear on the sled too...I have a bad on the back end of my sled that holds my shovel...

another vote for the voile stuff, i have had mine for 4 seasons of sledding and boarding, and i have dug a LOT of snow(i like to get stuck!) the thing is solid as can be and was $40 locally. i have bashed braches of trees, throw the thing around hit it on rocks and stumps, its pretty much as solid as they come! and a few tiny flecks of the paint have chipped off from rocks, so it still looks nice.
