Hyfax Nytro mystery

Sooo had to replace one hyfax because it was shot and the other was in great condition… skid seems straight… I use ice scratchers till I reach the powder? Track looks fine… Any ideas….

I saw this same thing last year and the only thing we could come up with, was they were riding double, for back country ski access and both riders were on the LH side most of the time, but it was just like you say.....one side worn right to the rail and the other looked just fine. We replaced the bad hifax and the guy went the rest of the year with no issues.

It's a mystery??????

Now that you said that I was thinking I had to pull a snowmobile that blew up out of a ditch and then about 8 miles…. I bet the pressure of pulling the other sled wore through it?

I had the same issue on my nytro when it was brand new. I broke the hyfax in properly, but after maybe 100 miles the right side was worn down all the way to the rail.

I ended up replacing them with hyperfaxes, and those have been fine for 3 seasons now, but I know another user on here that had the same issue - premature wear of the hyfax on the right side.

older nytro's were notoriously bad on the Hyfax's right where the track comes in contact with the rails at the front of the rail. On the newer nytro's it was a little lees because they went to a shorter middle shock to help the track approach angle. it was '10 maybe '09 when they made thew change. I would still inspect the clips but it sounds like you found the issue that caused your problem.

I know that here, we always recommend the Hyperfax for the Yamahas. I know they are $200.00, but when you have the labor to replace stock hifax twice a year, they Hyperfax pay for themselves real quick. Especially on the Apex cuz you have to pull the skid to do it.

I've run both the AC and Timbersled skid on my MTX. It always wears down the right one first and pretty sure it has to do with the cooler position in the tunnel. I think there is simply more water on the right, and it may not lube as well as the more "snowy" left side. Just a theory however.

I've never towed with my sled and it happened the first time on a high speed run down a soft packed groomed trail at speed (maybe 75mph). The hyfax probably had 300km's in the powder first, so it wasn't a break in issue. The second time it wore down the right hyfax was an early morning ride in spring on marginal hard icy trails accessing the backcountry. Same result.

Last year we had epic snow all season, so wear on both hyfax looked very similar, therefore I assumed the track cleats are not in play....

OTM

Agreed. One of the first mods I do on all my new sleds.

On my apex I cut out a couple of windows on the track a bit wider so I did not have to pull the skid.
