How will a dented SLP pipe be affected???

Hey guy,

Just received my SLP pipe kit at the post office today, opened the box and noticed a 1.5"x1.5" by about 1/8-1/4" dented or flat spot on the pipe. Looks like Ace Ventura delivered it himself. Box was a little tattered and ripped, with a few scuff mark, but the contents were not really packaged tight or individually wrapped either.

I am have yet to contact the seller about this misshape, and the POST wont accept any responsibility other than allowing it to be returned to sender, but will a small dent like this, will it drastically affect performance and operation? I am most worried about burn down, lean spots and screwed up back pressure frequency. I will post up some pics as soon as i get home from work, but looking for a little insight.

The dent is directly after the turn from the manifold just above and shadowing the welded seam, on the outward part of the pipe.

Thanks

Yes, a dented pipe will lose HP. Did you pay for shiping insurance? Was it a used or new pipe? Call SLP they maybe able to repair it for you as well as give you a solid reply to you questions.

If it was sold as "new" from a dealer then I'd return it and ask for another one, fairly straightforward. Private party sale...things get more complicated. If there wasn't any insurance on the box then you're mostly SOL short of working with the seller and seeing if he's willing to help you out.

The item was new from a dealer. Not sure if they are an actual SLP pipe dealer though... Ebay special but from a guy with a tonne of + feedback and a tonne of for sale motorcycle inventory. The items shipping was said to be quoted with insurance but i will have to look at the box to verify. I have not yet been able to raise the sellers attension on this enough to reply to my questions and concerns but i have not gotten pics yet either. I will most likely be contacting SLP to see what can be and what must be done.

i had a dented SLP pipe a couple of seasons ago, took it to a local body shop and they pulled it out for like 20 bucks.
How was this done? spot weld it and pull it? Interested to know how well it turned out... this is my next option

I'm sure everyone disagrees but a dent or"flat spot" the size you're talking about isn't going to make any noticeable difference. I seriously doubt you would even notice a hp difference on a Dyno. I have crashed and beat 2-stroke dirt bikes doing much worse pipe damage than you're talking about with no issues or noticeable power loss. I rode my M8 about 15 miles out of the woods after hitting a tree last year with no motor damage. The dent in my pipe was about 4" deep and 12" across, and the pipe no longer connected with the silencer like it was supposed to either.

If it were me and the pipe were new, I would want a new condition pipe but if it became a huge deal to get another one I would run what you've got.

A small dent like that will do absolutely nothing to cause your motor harm or cost you any power at all.

Bob Hannah used to carry a ball peen hammer in practice and he would stop and beat (literally beat the crap) out of his pipe and tune the powerband of the engine by radically denting his pipe. Yours will be just fine. Bolt her up and run it IMO

^This 100%^

A while back a motocross mag did a test on 2 stroke pipes and dented them in various places and various sizes... There was very minimal differences if any at all with small dents... They had to mangle the pipe pretty bad to see a change on the dyno.

You guys are inspiring a little more confidence in my situation. But I am still going to try and get what i can get.

Thanks a lot....

any SLP reps on the board?

I have dented a few MX pipes over the years and was able to fix them myself. Cap both ends of the pipe, fill with compressed air, heat dented area and tap with a hammer. Its worked for me. If it's just a ding I wouldn't even worry about it.

when i took my pipe to the body shop they just spot welded on a little stub and pulled on it. took like 3 spots to do it but it looked great when it was done. i belive it was like 20 bucks? maybe 30? but either way it was cheap and it looked as good as new when they were done with it.

i wouldnt suggest filling anything with compressed air that wasnt intended for ,, good way to get hurt

The key is to have a regulated air supply.
Its been a long time since my pa and i did it, but i beleive it only takes 7-12 psi and some heat.
The first attempt we blew a hole in the pipe... A few sparks and a oh s*** was all that happened.

Fill it with water and freeze it. Works great i hae done it many times on bike pipes.

I have no idea if it will affect the power at all but if the item was sold as new I would at minimum demand a refund for shipping if not a discount on the pipe.

Chris.

sounds good ,, but i know someone who lost about 6 lbs of back flesh doing somthing like that,, just sayin

sh!tty deal on the pipe ryan sorry to hear.as for performance loss,i doubt it(as well).
i like the body shop idea if warranty and insurance fails, but then again its ceramic so its gonna leave a weld mark or discolouration.years ago when i worked at a garage, many times the body shop would spot weld washers on to the side of a door panel and pull the dent out, then fill and polish.but yours is ceramic so thats different.you would have to get back into ceramic coatings.yeah.......see what the dealer says.
