How was the sleding

Awesome!!! 24" of new, on top of 24" from earlier in week, settled to bout 3' of fluff, sunshine and POW!! After it again tmrw....

Pray for SNOW!

Bear paw had about the same. 8" powder sugar on top of 2" ice over earlier hard pack. The trail in was pretty smooth for the 100+ trucks along the road and in the lot. The trail is icey under any snow. Got stuck on ice at the last turn before making the climb onto the mountain. Up top was great considering what we have had so far. This area was pretty tracked out by the time we left at 3pm. IMG_0007.jpg

thank you

thanks for sharing your photos and details of your trips, I am sure the concern is that everyone will go to your cool spot, but I like to know if it is worth spending my sledding budget just to go some place that conditions may be damaging to the sled or a waste of time. I like to have other sledders around just in case and to learn useful stuff

I don't ride alone and there had to be about 100+ sleds up there that day. The only thing I could see getting damaged from would be the large trees that will never be covered and some of the large boulders that are still showing that may be covered up with another 6-8 ft of snow. There is a small lake when you first get onto the mountain. I would stay along the edges. The south side looked a little thin for my liking. In a day or 2 when the tracks possibly get covered it may be good again. I don't think we saw anyone leaving with damage. Just don't be crazy and stick to the main areas and the bowls. If you can't see the rocks then it must be to foggy to ride.

There was a small slide on the south side that drops down into the back bowl. Looked a little wind loaded over top of the hoar layer.

GC Report 01-04-2013

Posted video from my ride Saturday here: http://www.snowest.com/forum/showthread.php?t=365107

We unloaded at the second hard right corner, never saw any other sleds all day until we got back down to the truck were we saw a dude load up some old Polaris. 2" down at the unload, 10-12" light pow up around 5k. I figured it would be bullet proof under the fresh but it was surprisingly soft hero snow. Hit lots of untracked road in the morning, did some venturing off trail up into baker lake area from the bottom and other zones. My buddy uncovered a pretty good rock out by swan, but that was about it, no damage. Surprisingly awesome actually but there's not a lot of off trail to be had. We were very cautious off trail most of the time.

There's a good 40-50" base above 4k. The boulders in front of my sled in this photo are a good 4ft pile in the summer. As anyone who rides GC knows though, we're gonna need at least 80" till most of the trees start to disappear.

EOD we ran into two snowbikes on our way up to the tower, and some side by sides. The side by sides reeked havoc on the road. It was mutilated all the way down from the tower. Lots of trucks and some jeeps too down lower. Road needs to get snowbanked to stop vehicular traffic. :face-icon-small-fro

nice report, dont hate on the jeepers if they are legal still tho. I do both and can tell ya the ruts caused by jeeps are no worse than the washboard whoops the sleds cause as they braaap braap up the road. this has been a crap sled season so far, but still fun if you have a backup ride. guys that give us a bad name are the ones who dont know how to let the air out of their tires and creep up the trail without tire spin. maybe thats what you saw up there at GC..

It was side by sides really that did the damage and I'm pretty sure that they are considered off road vehicles only, thus not legal at GC. I didn't see any plates on the two that were coming down from the tower, but then again, I wasn't really looking either, to busy bouncing out of their ruts.

I don't know if it has passed yet or not but I believe there is a new law allowing side by sides on forest service roads. If not now then some time this year.
