how to properly wash/wax a car

Hey guys, I got my wisdom teeth out yesterday and I'm getting rather bored sitting at home. I got today and another day to do nothing but sit at home doped up on painkillers, so i am gonna clean my sled and car. I found plenty of info on cleaning the sled, but I was wondering what the proper way to wax a car is and what brand wax to use thanks all!

The way I wax my car is give it a good washing, like take pressure washer after it and hand scrub it with a good automotive soap ( I use Black Magic Wet Shine). I then use Mothers Clay Bar on the entire car, this cleans the surface of the car very well. Then I use Mothers Carnuba wax and hand buff the whole car. It takes quite along time to do this all but is totally worth it in the end!:face-icon-small-coo

don't bother with a "wax". Get a sealant or a synthetic wax. Some sort of polymer wax. Polymer bonds with the paint, lasts much longer. The key to polymer is to let it sit on the vehicle for a couple hours. Longer you let it sit the better it bonds. I used to wash, clean the paint with a cleaning wax (not really a wax), polish scratches out, polish the paint (to blend and smooth) and then I would apply the sealant and let it sit overnight. Probably overkill but it works.

When waxing use a dishsoap to wash the vehicle. Dish soap does a great job of dissolving the wax. Don't use dish soap after you've waxed for general washing it will wear down the wax sooner.

I have been very happy with "Meguires" brand wax. Before that I used Turtle wax and I can tell the Meguires gives better results.

Do you have a black truck? What exactly do you use? STEP BY STEP. My truck looks gorgeous for a couple hours after but then the dust settles on it

Don't own a black truck but I have worked on many. (detailing)

It really depends what you want to accomplish.

Steps are the same;
1. Wash with dish soap to assist in removing old wax. Might even wash it twice back to back.

2. Scratch removal with a compound. I use a Milwaukee buffer and foam pad. You can use your elbow grease but it takes longer.

3. Polish. Use a polishing agent with no wax/sealant in it. You need more touch on black. It's easy to swirl. If you don't know how to use a real buffer/orbital sander don't attempt it on black. Cheap random orbital buffers are probably better here if you haven't done much polishing. Polishing also does minor scratch removal. You might consider masking pieces of plastic and rubber to protect them from the polish, there are products that help in getting it out but I found old fashioned (non gel) toothpaste works great.

4. Seal it. Like I said before. Polymer sealant needs time to bond.

The black vehicle process really isn't any different. It just takes more work and you have to be careful not to swirl during polishing.

I expected to see Jessica soaping down the General Lee when I opened this thread. LMAO

BTW, I will never own a black vehicle ever again. Been there still doing that.

procedure for black

1. remove gas cap
2. move truck/car roughly 100ft fore or aft depending on alignment
3. move identical truck/car in white into postion under gas cap
4. install gas cap

Black is awesome just hard to keep clean no other way to slice it
